Over the Christmas holiday I listened on BBC 7 to a repeat of the documentary about Kenny Everett's stint on BBC local radio in the early 70s, following his sacking from Radio 1. Very interesting it was too. However, I was staggered to hear that the nascent BBC local stations were limited to just ONE HOUR of needletime PER DAY! How on earth did they fill the air?! Seems extraordinary now.

**** I remember Radio Derby in the early/ mid 70s. Wall to wall news and weather, both local and national...plus crappy quiz shows ( Tonight it's our first quarter final with Burton On Trent Pirelli Tyre Factory Vs The Red Lion from Long Eaton etc etc), magazine shows featuring local 'personalities', specialist interest stuff like gardening and trainspotting...plays and panel games filched from Radio 4. That kind of stuff. Not riveting, as you can imagine.
There's a few recordings in circulation of BBC Radio 1 shows that were errr...'simul-cast' (they were on at the same time) by Radio Medway, and there are several minutes of the Medway presenters either side of the 'Pop' shows which show what the local stations sounded like i.e still stuck in the 1940s ;-)
