Needletime (slightly off topic)

Over the Christmas holiday I listened on BBC 7 to a repeat of the documentary about Kenny Everett's stint on BBC local radio in the early 70s, following his sacking from Radio 1. Very interesting it was too. However, I was staggered to hear that the nascent BBC local stations were limited to just ONE HOUR of needletime PER DAY! How on earth did they fill the air?! Seems extraordinary now.
