Is the clipping at the bass end of things? If so then it must be too much bass boost in audacity. If not then I just have the audacity input levels too high! the mono tape recorder it was recorded from had automatic level control but usually this just reduced level if it was too high and distorting, it didn't pump the recording level like some.
