90s Peel Collection

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm glad that there is the enthusiasm to tackle this. I would have liked to have digitised this material myself over the years but have only a slow laptop and a genuine uncertainty about audio technology.

There is still a lot to be discussed regarding this but as a starting point I can put together a complete list of shows by date and send out to the group in the next week or possibly two. This will keep things ticking over while the 70s collection is being digitised.

I was very tired when I sent out the message last night - actually, the collated show records are currently kept on an Access database, not an Excel spreadsheet. I will also make this database available if I can find the disc rattling around somewhere.

A final list of still-required shows could then be built up. By the way, and out of curiosity, is there a repository list of all the shows already available online?

Speaking as the protective guardian of the tapes I am nervous about splitting them up too much to send out but understand this may be preferable from a practical point of view. I will have to give this some thought and would want to ensure that I do not lose or break up the collection. I am a librarian and have a nostalgic sense of the importance of hard copy!

Please keep going with the thoughts and suggestions, I'm sure we can come up with a viable plan.

Many thanks,

Colin.

PS Yes, Richard, the tapes were a major part of my disposable income back in the day. But for extended periods I would rather go without food than forego my taping (I exaggerate only slightly...)

PPS I only ever wanted whole shows because at the back of my mind I knew they would be valuable when John was no longer with us. The music was fine but John's links were finer.

PPPS The collection contains periods of weeks and months when practically every show is complete and intact. There are also relatively fallow periods of months at a time with little representation. But for all that, the recordings represent 1992 - 2004 pretty evenly.

PPPPS The database includes my own categorisation of each track for search purposes. I'm sure that'll be a source of humour and dispute...!

I'm with Steve (Teenage Kicks) on this one. I was thinking it might be another thing the list as a whole might want to tackle after we see how the "400 Box" goes. Maybe the ins and outs of that one are occupying everyone's attention at the moment. As an alternative, or maybe in the interim, depending on how Colin feels about it about an international thing, maybe me and Steve (Teenage Kicks) could take this on (or at least get started on it), as some kind of "East Is Peel" project -- South Korea and Japan come together in the most important bilateral effort since World Cup 2002!I'm not really set up with decent level tape conversion technology right now, but suspect this might not be too difficult to sort out here in Tokyo. Or we could split the job in other ways, in terms of finance for postage (would definitely have to be registered), or Steve TK doing the conversions while I sort out full tracklistings, etc, on Excel to build on what Colin already has -- and for whatever group/online database eventually emerges.Only an idea. Would be great to have two big group projects on the go at the same time. Seems like a big shame to leave Colin's mighty collection in his attic.Speaking personally, would like to make a decent hands-on contribution to making more old shows available, but feel a bit isolated geographically on the 400 Box thing. But might be relatively simple to coordinate this on an "East is Peel" basis, while taking on board lessons from the 400 Box party.Colin? Steve TK? Anyone else?Cheers,Steve W--- In peel@yahoogroups.com, "Steve" <so_it_goes_2512@...> wrote:>> Dear Colin> > Thank you for your response, and I am surprised that nobody has yet > taken up the baton on your behalf, especially since these recordings > fill a gap as vital as those in 'The 400 Box' (at least some idea of > the contents of which would be welcome) and are probably, dare I > suggest, of much better quality and therefore just as deserving > of 'flac', 'flic' or whatever?> Since I live in South Korea, I don't see what I could personally do > at this distance, which is a shame, since I have the equip, emt > necessary for doing a decent digital transfer...if you wanted to go > down the route of sending them to me, I would refund the cost of > postage, of course!!!
