recording peel

hello,

i noticed that you have had problems recording the online streams so maybe
this will help.

the best way of recording these online streams is to grab the actual file
off the site. this way you are getting the best quality clone in compressed
format...it'll be an exact copy that hasn't gone through your soundcard.

anyway, i'm not sure what kind of stream it is, i am guesing real audio as
that is what i'v downloaded from the bbc site. there are 2 programs which
help out greatly. first is URLSNOOPER. most times when you click on a file,
it has some long, long address that is called a "referer file". it's not the
actual file. with urlsnooper you file out the address of the actual source
file (rtsp for real audio, mms for wma, etc).

once you have the source address, you can simply copy and paste it into
STREAMBOXVCR. normally those files are small and you can download them
faster than listening to it online. i recall streamboxvcr having a real
audio to wav function so you can convert and burn away. also, you can
program it to record at specific times.

also the advantage of downloading the actual file is that you get problems
if you lose the stream in the middle of recording. you've got it on your hd!

hope that helps.

=============================================================
as july & the new radio 1 timetable draws nearer I'm looking for an easier
way of recording the peel shows. I know that the shows are available online
afterwards for a week but I find that it doesn't always work. Can anyone
suggest a way of recording as mp3s (say a particular tv/radio card plus good
recording software?) as I won't be able to stay up and record manually as
before :(

Any ideas?

I don't know if this is available in the UK, but it looks fun:

As for PC cards, if you have good "Freeview" TV reception, then you
should consider a Freeview ("DVB-T") card for your PC - I've heard
people say good things about the "Nebula" card, but there are quite a
few to choose from. Google will probably find lots of people talking
about them. They range in cost from about 60 to 100 pounds.

The advantage of the using a DVB card is that you can record the
compressed broadcast directly. DVB uses "MP2" compression, which is
similar to MP3, and most MP3 players can play back the MP2 files created
when you record from those cards. The advantage is that playing back
the recording sounds identical to listening to the live broadcast.

Unless you're using Linux, I can't help with software recommendations.

Dave.

And to add a different and slighty less digital option
I run a lead from the tape outputs on an amplifier
to the line in/out of my computer. I then use TotalRecorder
http://www.HighCriteria.com to record the input (also works
with Internet streams). Its shareware but very cheap (the free version
is too limited to be useful). Comes with a timer which has proved very
useful for
recording things when I'm asleep
I suspect there are as many different methods of doing all this as there
are people on this list!
