For those of us who have grown up obsessed with John Peel's annual
Festive Fifty, Christmas 2004 will be unlike any since 1975 (with
qualified exceptions for 1977 and 1991). 11pm to 1am of the 28th,
29th and 30th of December will see Rob Da Bank present the last ever
Festive Fifty (or, at least, the last to be largely based on songs
played throughout the year by Peel.) Voting has, apparently, been
eccentric, with a number of people drawn to to the online voting
form by the publicity surrounding Peel's death. So we may yet see
Marroon 5 slugging it out with Melt Banana. But though the Festive
Fifty provides the listeners' take on proceedings, Peel would often
lament both its over-reliance on white skinny indie kids and the
fact that several tracks he personally favoured would not make it
in. But how to know what the great man himself would have voted for?
Well, simply spend an afternoon cutting and pasting the
tracklistings of each of his shows into an Excel spreadsheet,
sort 'em alphabetically, count which songs got played the most, and
hey preto! ACME proudly presents Peely's top fifteen records of the
year:

5 Plays:

Delgados - Everybody Come Down
Electrelane - This Deed
Mint Chicks - Blue Team Go!
The Vaults - Straight-faced

4 Plays:

22-20s - Why Don't You Do It To Me?
Bloc Party - Banquet
Breeze and Styles - Electric
Cornershop presents Bubbly Kaur - Topknot
DJ Garna - Wonky Vocal
Hakan Lidbo - Clockwise
King Honey - Plectrum
Little Killers - You Got It Made
Melys - Eyeliner
Wizzbit - Emerald City
Yourcodeameis:Milo - All Roads To Fault

Note: The idea for this is nicked wholesale from the splendid Radio
Plus website, who link to legal mp3 downloads of tracks played on
the Peel show. They've performed a similar exercise in the past,
but, understandably, haven't done so this year.
