Peel change of voice quality

I seem to remember thinking/deducing/finding that the BBC radio internet quality was really bad in the early days (2000-2007-ish), possibly as low as 64kbps, maybe up to 80. At some point it went to 128 and only over the past year or so went up to 320. But John's voice at 64kbps would sound virtually the same as at 320, only the music would sound different (bad). So, yes, it must have been a studio "effect" I reckon.... a pity really....
