I think history tries to paint some great dividing moment and that Peel
"went full punk" and never looked back, but in actual fact it was as much
to do with the Friday Rock Show starting in 1978 and therefore he didn't
have to cover the classic rock end of the spectrum any more. For the first
year or so of the FRS they were repeating rock Peel sessions from the
archives. The BBC obviously felt that there was enough material and room in
the schedules to have two shows covering two styles. I don't know how much
Peel had to do with that decision, but probably not a lot!
