Happy holidays to everyone, and thanks to everyone for all the great shares we've had this year.
And a question... is the Mooo down at the moment?  I've been getting "cannot connect" error messages for the last couple of days
Thanks!
Dave

OK the TEAC is back in service and I've re-ripped all the tapes from TR026 and re-uploaded to Mooo. Thanks to Stuart for spotting the wobble - it's very noticeable on all of that latest batch  once I was listening for it. I'd just assumed it was the tape/reception quality that was at fault. The new rips are much better (to my dodgy ears at least!).
Onwards for now and two more rips from TR036 and TR03702 July 1994 (BBC World Service)24 April 1995 (BBC World Service)

Thanks Stuart - hopefully I won't have to re-rip too many. I'll have a listen through to some of the last batch while I wait to get the deck sorted.

I've replaced the belt with a spare I had knocking around that is far too tight, so it works again but  it's no good for ripping as the tape speed is wobbling all over the place, but at least that hopefully means the broken belt was the only issue. I can order a spare off the internet that is the right size, but will take a few days to arrive

Just starting to wikify the tapes – the first one TR026 is OK, but some of the later ones are affected.  For example at 1:46 14th June 1993 show -  the Grinderswitch lead guitar sounds very fluttery. Also the African lead guitar at around 23m in the same tape. There was one where it was more of a slow down plus flutter but can’t find that one yet. Maybe I will get round to finding where the problem started to save you re-ripping all of them! It might still be the tapes, I didn’t hear any flutter in the Derby Box tapes, other than the Memorex ones the sound was ace on these. Maybe it was a sudden onset failure though!  From: RobF robfleay@ntlworld.com [peel] Sent: Monday, December 12, 2016 8:37 AMTo: peel@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [peel] Tom In Atlanta No More - but still has 300 tapes.   Thanks Stuart. 2016 seems to be determined to kill everything good. Even tape decks!

Can you point me at a show where you noiticed the speed issues? I wasn't aware that was happening, and it could indeed have been the tapes as some of them are in worse condition than others (and a few are low quality promo cassettes that have been taped over).

The symptoms with my tape deck are that the transport mechanism is stuck in the up position, and won't reset. When I switch the unit off and on again you can hear it trying to reset with a click, but it fails and then gives up after about 5 clicks. It was brand new about 10 years ago, so I wasn't expecting this - but then it has seen some action with the Derby Box, 400 Box and now the Tom tapes.

I did notice the speed variations on the Grinderswitch but thought it was the tapes! My own Nak is away with Aberdeen's only tape deck technician, Karl's tape deck also expired and last I heard even Max is looking for a new Dat!
I'll adjust the wiki when carbon dating the shows.

Ah - I must have forgotten to upload that 19th December show. It's there now

I uncovered another anomaly with the MAX-DAT listings this afternoon too, as I was ripping the show from 2 July 1994, which is not the same as the MAX-DAT 2 July show on the wiki. I think those July shows just need shuffling up by a week, as in this one he talks about next week giving his Glastonbury review, whereas the MAX-DAT July 2 page is the show where he does the review. Glastonbury was the last weekend in June, so I think the pre-recorded nature of the WS shows can get confusing.

And then my trusty TEAC tape deck packed up - so no more WS shows until I can get it sorted..

Thanks Rob for these shares!

The BBCWS MaxDat tape dates were always a bit speculative for the World Service shows as there were usually 8 to a tape, and it's possible that the odd show was missed. The DAT filename wasn't always accurate and this was especially the case with the WS shows.

I couldn't find your 19th December show on the Mooo, so don't know if it's one of the other MaxDat shows from December, or one that was missed by Max. Did he definitely say he would be broadcasting the Fall session on the World Service?

As far as sound quality goes, MaxDat wins hands down I'm afraid! So there's probably no point in ripping any shows already definitely available from MaxDat, though any show date corrections would be welcome.

Stuart
