[peel] Re: Genesis 5:5 and the Rich 160

Pretty good sound quality especially bearing in mind the humble cassette
recorder used and tapes. Ripping my fourth tape at the moment. I need to be
ready to tweak azimuth playback on the fly on playback as it does vary from
one end of the tape to the other, I've had to re-record some sections as a
result. The playback pitch also varies between tapes!

Would describe as good to very good FM Stereo, no Dolby, some slight FM
hiss/crackle at times. The top end is typical slightly soft TDK-D and
there's good bass extension.

I'm ripping a batch while at my work digs and will wikify/notify each batch
on my days off at homeso that should start happening later this week.

If you're really impatient then you can find the first results on my bit of
the Mooo.

Any info about the source / quality of the Rich 160 recordings, Stuart?

Nearer 300 SL tapes by my reckoning!

I too did have a little Genesis phase I have to admit but went completely
off them around the Abacab period. Followed PG (up to PG4) rather than PC
though did like In The Air Tonight and PCs drumming on PG3 was OK I suppose.

Don't know about the sell-out type scenario, I wonder if it's just that it
becomes more difficult to maintain creativity, but easier or more natural to
make what the masses would like. What I mean is, are there a group of
bands/musicians who had some great original material up their sleeves but
ditched it in preference to something that would sell more? I favour the
idea that most of the bands who "sold out" actually had used up all their
creative reserves, but still had the technical ability, the fame etc to keep
making a living in the industry. Fair enough, but I don't have to like them
any more!

And maybe most bands who still did have something to say, did so, which is
why Wire in 2004 was a fantastic gig and they didn't play a single track I
knew from the 70s/80s/90s.

I digress.

I have opened and sorted the first batch of the Rich 160. There are separate
track listings too which I will scan (sorry Rich not quite up to the beauty
of the John Peel Papers listings but gold dust nonetheless).

Back at work at the weekend (my ripping station is at my digs where I work)
so will take the first batch there and hopefully get the first few tapes
online then.

good punk / new-wave and The Fall, Can (incredible drumming), Magazine etc.
