The aforementioned 17 Oct 92 has the original release of "Dreams", and to my ears it sounds no better in that context than when it became omnipresent on Virgin, ILR, the intro of Grandstand etc. two years later.

Self-hating ex-public schoolboys in England tend to have a misguided weakness for a romantic concept of Irishness or Scottishness or Welshness - I've been there myself (though without the public school bit) because it seems more "authentic" than their own identity and enables them to express their latent ruralist yearnings without seeming Daily Mailish or nostalgic for the British Empire.  I suspect that's why the music press went wild for the Cranberries, however briefly, though I'd never have put Peel in that category.
