I have also been trying really hard all day to think of a truly dreadful act that John championed, and I don't think any of the ones mentioned so far are THAT bad. You can't completely dismiss Blur and Radiohead.
I'm not mad on either but both had the occasional decent song. If we were to compare ALL the acts he ever played to, say, Joss Stone, hopefully we'd all agree that his taste was pretty ace. I think a lot of it might be down to age. I was at college in Leamington Spa when the C86 'scene' kicked off and to this day I fondly remember acts like The Shop Assistants, That Petrol Emotion, The (early) Soup Dragons, Stitched Back Foot Airman etc etc - and I still play the 7"s on a disturbingly regular basis. OH! Someone mentioned Gene. Hmm not great were they!
