Dead geezer was Michael William Coplestone Dillon Onslow, 7th Earl of Onslow - never heard his R3 show but heard the obit show but I think the show you are referring to wasn't his.  I have a snippet of a show called Mixing It  that fits the bill - it was on one of the LO tapes I have digitised. The show was from Nov 92 with Steve so it goes for uploading ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/mixingit/

Utterly useless, I know, but I heard some well spoken geezer (possibly a Lord or something) talking on Last Words recently, saying he used to have a rock show on Radio 3 - could it be him? If so, there's a clue for you radio sleuths: he died recently, possibly the week before last...?
cheers

I seem to recall that the presenter was a typical R3 presenter (very formal, well-spoken) and it lasted just 30 min or 1 hr. I remember a show where he focussed on the Tull album "Songs From The Wood", playing 3 tracks. I think he gave quite a bit of technical/muso comments about the music (ie no chance of the Sex Pistols) ...
