I assume that's what David meant when he said his recordings were straight
out the desk and therefore pre-broadcast compression

I am also surprised by the revelation - I have old tapes from this period
where the level drops noticeably when the drums kick in. I assumed all these
years that it was my crappy old tape recorder doing the compression!
