A quick update on where we are at!
Last week I posted out the final last batch of 20 of the eBay "400 box"
cassettes - these were mainly odds and sods that got missed out of the main
ripping schedule, plus a few faulty tapes which may just work on a different
machine. There are around 50 tapes still out there with rippers, a few of
which have been made available via this group already.
In the last few days I have had time to briefly go through the Steve Lowman
tapes (and thanks to him btw!). There are 565 cassettes in all, and they
are a very mixed bag - many are Peel / Kershaw, although of these I am unsure
how many will turn out to be complete sections of shows, or just
compilations of edited-down tracks without links. There are also quite a lot of
non-Peel / Kershaw tapes, a few of "Mixing It", a few one-off radio shows, and a
few which look like they were mixtapes, or recorded from LPs.
Quite a different task to catalogueing the 400 Box - 95% of these tapes
come with extensive handwritten tracklistings on the inserts, but no specific
dates, although quite a few have a month and year - this may reflect the fact
that they may be compilations from various shows rather than individual
shows, although the random ones I have listened to today turned out to be
complete sections of shows.
Aware that there may be duplications, but suggest that we continue and rip
all of them anyway, as there may be increases in quality, or tape flip /
end-of-show gaps that can be filled.
Have divided them into sections:
1991 - mainly Peel & Kershaw - 56 tapes
1992 - mainly Peel & Kershaw - very full coverage - 174 tapes
1993 - mainly Peel & Kershaw - very full coverage - 204 tapes
1994 and later - quite a few are Peel & Kershaw - 65 tapes
Mixed bag - many non-Peel / Kershaw; Some pre 1991 Peel; One off radio
shows & Lps - 66 tapes
Will start sorting these out and sending to rippers in the next few days.
Have started numbering the individual tapes pretty much in the order they
come to hand - have started at "L001" and so on.
Rippers - will mail you individually to let me know when I am sending you a
batch.
Have updated my spreadsheet with a new page for these tapes, but have not
had time to enter any detail in terms of length of tape, condition,
tracklist, date of broadcast etc - so will ask the rippers where possible to add
information - can someone remind me / us where to find the spreadsheet file
online - or could someone set up a section in the wiki for this info?
There are a couple of odd tapes without tracklistings, and also a few cases
with tracklistings but no tapes (no - they don't match!) - so if any
rippers should find they have a mismatched tape and insert we may be able to swap.
Money-wise I will spend the last of the generously-donated funds from 2
years ago in sending out this first wave of Steve Lowman tapes with their
prepaid return special delivery envelopes. So I guess when I start getting these
back from the rippers I'll be coming back to the group cap in hand for more
donations before I can send out the second wave.
Cheers!
