the captain is dead

When I was 20 back in 81, I took a chance on "Trout Mask..." because I'd gleaned via the NME etc that it was a seminal album. On the first play I couldn't believe how "bad" it was - the sound was cacophonous, screechy and out-of-tune. The let-down was exacerbated by the fact that I bought a Doors best-of ('Goldmine' double) at the same time, which was extremely "musical" of course ! I persisted in playing the Beefheart, determined to recoup my outlay and it did get better, gradually, very gradually, certain songs standing out more than others, like "Moonlight On Vermont". I read that Matt Groening had a similar transition from hate to love with 'Trout Mask ..'
