I remember on The John Peel Show he once regaled us with a story of how King George ordered the then royal yacht Britannia to be sunk once the replacement was ready, allegedly because he didn't want commoners to tread its boards. "I'm sure I remember hearing that somewhere" he told us.

And I thought "Yes, you did hear it somewhere. You told us that story as narrator of the Classic Ships series on Channel 4".

Re the Classic Ships series, he told us once that after it was broadcast he regularly received invitations to come and open yachting regattas and the like from people who assumed he must be a sailing fan, and he would write back and say that the only ships he was interested in were the ones that had a cinema and duty-free shops...
