Flac files

As someone who doesn't know their Flac from their elbow, and who 
thought ogg vorbis was a planet off of Dr Who, I seem to remember it 
was decided that Flac was to be the format of choice for storing shows.
I have noticed that, when using Audacity, Wav files are larger than 
Flacs. Does this not mean they're better? Or are we going for some sort 
of compromise between quality and file size.
Or what?
