Hi Sean
I see what you are saying. John was the first to play New Orders "Blue Monday" track. After the first playing he said he had mixed feelings about it giving a brief description "dancey" come something else.
When tracks become popularized by the media it can be difficult to remember that most people just shrugged their shoulders on first hearing and in some cases that well known classics were not so unique when first released as other groups and bands were producing similar sounds at the same time.
Its good that Peely's shows are finding new listeners world wide. I am all for new music but it would be nice to think of John Peel shows being played somewhere maybe having their own radio show :) Gordon
But I'm forgetting that's what does happen. Radio 1 uses most of the 10-12pm slots replaying music that John brought to our attention decades ago while not bothering with new upcoming bands with new sounds. Ah to have a dj that really loves music without pigeon holing it.

Gordon,
I'd vote "retroactive appreciation". (See what I did there?)
I've never heard any of those shows, but here in the states, as word of the music he featured rippled across the ocean, it would drive what the import stores would stock and what the DJ pools would service, and thus what we'd play over here; it would be nice to actually hear the original pebble hit the water, so to speak.
When I finally got to hear Peel for myself (that is, when the BBC started streaming over the Internet, so quite late in the party) I understood what was so compelling about his presentation, and that's why I'd really like to hear as much of this as possible and with as much ephemera as possible - context is very helpful, even more so than the "packaged retrospective", in getting an idea of the impact a record made.
After all, it's one thing to hear *about* how Peel first reacted to "Teenage Kicks"; it's quite another to actually hear him actually react to it when you haven't heard it before. (Does that aircheck exist?)
