Hi everyone,
Buckle up your seatbelts and prepare for an onslaught... nay... an
avalanche of 1976 Festive Fifty related queries.
As some of you already know, for the last few years, I've been on a
sub-autistic mission to collect each Festive 50 entry: primarily in
the version broadcast and then also in any version released or
broadcast up to that point (therefore theoretically eligible). I'm
not counting boots which I know is kinda problematic. So welcome to
the first in an ongoing series of queryfests (I'm guessing they'll be
quarterly ish (essentially, whenever I've got a week off work)).
So down to business, starting with a question that I sadly know the
answer to
Are there any surviving copies, clips, snippets of the 1976 Festive
Fifty broadcast?
More realistically, is there any surviving paperwork, indicating the
versions broadcast?
And for our older subscribers, does anyone have any recollections
relating to any of the tracks played (I was only 7!!)
I've detailed my informed guesses/speculation with regard to each
track below. Please feel free to agree/advise/shoot me down in flames
(that's why I'm listing them).
John Peel Festive 50 1976
1 Led Zeppelin Stairway to Heaven
Would surely have played Led Zeppelin IV version (8.00) and indeed
does during the 78FF
Also eligible: (depending when voting took place - anyone?) the live
version from The Song Remains the Same (10.58)
The `In Concert' version broadcast on Radio 1 (8.49). Is this edited
on BBC Sessions CD as compared to broadcast?
2 Derek and the Dominoes Layla
Very likely played version from Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs
(7.04) [This seems to be version JP plays before 1978 Festive Fifty
broadcast]
Also eligible: the truncated single (2.43)
I think the versions on the 1972 compilations `The History of Eric
Clapton' and `Eric Clapton at His Best' are the same as Layla and
Other Assorted Love Songs
3 Bob Dylan Desolation Row
Got to be from Highway 61 Revisited [and indeed JP plays it from
there for 78FF broadcast]
4 Pink Floyd - Echoes
Has to be from Meddle (23.21)
5 The Jimi Hendrix Experience All Along the Watchtower
Probably from Electric Ladyland (4.00) and think the single is
identical
Eligible: Live version on Isle of Wight (5.39)
The US version of compilation Smash Hits has alternate take (4.00).
Was it available in UK?
6 Free All Right Now
Probably Fire and Water version 5.32 [this is the one JP plays before
78FF]
Eligible: truncated reworked single (4.18)
BBC session version (anyone got any details on this one?)
BBC In Concert version (again any details?)
Live version on Free Live! (6.24)
7 Racing Cars They Shoot Horses Don't They
Probably from Downtown Tonight
Eligible: Peel Session
8 Pink Floyd Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Potential to be a tricky one. The reasonable assumption is that this
refers to Parts 1-5 on Wish You Were Here (13.31) and this is what JP
plays in the 78FF.
An argument could be made for 6-9 from the same to be eligible also
(12.28)
9 The Beatles A Day in the Life
Has to be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (5.33). Suppose the
only question is whether JP let the final note play out? Did we even
get the run out groove?
10 Bob Dylan Like A Rolling Stone
Think standard single and Highway 61 version are identical (6.09) and
that JP would have played it from one of these.
Eligible: live version on Self-Portrait (5.18)
Live version on Before the Flood (7.09)
Plus there are singles with song split across both sides. Don't think
these were available in UK and really are the same as main version.
11 Poco Rose of Cimarron
As far as I can tell this would have to be the Rose of Cimarron LP
version (6.42) and indeed this is what he plays in the run up to the
78FF
12 Neil Young Cortez the Killer
This has to be from Zuma (7.29)
13 The Rolling Stones Brown Sugar
The single or Sticky Fingers (3.50). I think they're identical.
14 The Beatles Hey Jude
Has to be the single version (7.05)
15 Legendary Stardust Cowboy - Paralysed
I think there's possibly just the single version of this. Help anyone?
16 The Jimi Hendrix Experience Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)
Probably played from Electric Ladyland (5.12) and I think single is
identical despite name change.
Eligible: Live versions on Hendrix in the West (7.49) and More
Experience (7.17), which seem to be derived from same set. What
accounts for difference in running time? HitW is not listed as Slight
Return but assuming it is that version.
17 The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever
Has to be the single version (4.10)
18 Captain Beefheart Big Eyed Beans from Venus
Has to be from Clear Spot (4.23)
19 Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love
Highly likely to be the version from Led Zeppelin II (5.34)
Also eligible: live version from The Song Remains the Same LP (14.25)
(again depending on when vote took place)
The Top Gear session (6.09)
The `In Concert' version broadcast on Radio 1 (13.45). Is this edited
on BBC Sessions CD as compared to broadcast?
Plus... was the truncated single version (3.10) actually `available'
at this point. I don't think so.
20 Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird
Probably from pronounced leh-nerd skin-nerd (9.07). I think single is
identical. This is version played during 78FF broadcast.
Eligible: Live version on One More from the Road (11.30) (remastered
CD is slightly different to original vinyl release btw for extra
pedantry points) depending when the vote took place. I'm guessing
live single is identical.
21 Van Morrison Madame George
Probably played from Astral Weeks (9.45) as indeed it was during 78FF
broadcast.
Eligible: TB Sheets version (5.13)
22 The Doors Riders on the Storm
Probably played LA Woman version (7.09) and this is what is played in
run up to 78FF
Eligible: single edit (4.35)
24 Jefferson Airplane White Rabbit
Probably the stereo single or Surrealistic Pillow (2.30) version. I
think there the same.
Eligible: Mono single mix (2.58) which apparently runs 2.58. Can
anyone confirm?
25 Deep Purple Child in Time
Probably played from In Rock (10.18). Think single is same version
Eligible: Live version on Made in Japan (12.24)
26 Little Feat Long Distance Love
Has to be from The Last Record Album (2.43) and this is indeed
version played in run-up to 78FF
27 Grinderswitch Pickin' the Blues
As far as I know, there's only the Macon Tracks version (5.04)
28 Joe Walsh Rocky Mountain Way
Probably from The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get (5.15). I
think the single is the same version.
Eligible: Live version on You Can't Argue with a Sick Mind (7.40)
depending on when voting took place
29 The Who Won't Get Fooled Again
Probably from Who's Next (8.32). This is version played in 78FF run-up
Eligible: single edit (3.38)
30 The Misunderstood I Can Take You to the Sun
Got to be the single version
31 Genesis Supper's Ready
Has to be from Foxtrot (22.54)
32 Bob Marley and the Wailers No Woman, No Cry
Probably the version from Live!
Eligible: the original version on Natty Dread (4.06)
33 Jonathan Richman and the Modern lovers - Roadrunner
I'm tentatively guessing the Beserkley single version aka Roadrunner
(Once) was played, despite the fact that it was credited to Richman
only
Eligible: The earlier John Cale produced single (4.04) which crops up
on The Modern Lovers LP and was called Roadrunner (Twice) when
reissued with the above
34 Rod Stewart Maggie May
I'm guessing the single (5.46)
Eligible: have seen Every Picture Tells a Story version with running
time of (5.16). Can anyone confirm?
35 Jackson Browne Late for the Sky
Would think it inevitably has to be from Late for the Sky LP (5.36).
Is single the same version?
36 Led Zeppelin Kashmir
Go to be from Physical Graffiti (8.28)
37 The Jimi Hendrix Experience Hey Joe
Probably the single version (3.30)
Eligible: Live version from Soundtrack Recordings from the Film Jimi
Hendrix (3.50)
38 Allman Brothers Band Jessica
Probably played the version from Brothers and Sisters (7.31)
Eligible: single edit (7.00)
Live version on Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas (9.05)
depending on when voting took place
39 The Rolling Stones Jumping Jack Flash
Probably played the single (3.43)
Eligible: Live version on Get Your Ya-Ya's Out (4.02)
40 Grateful Dead Dark Star
Surely would have been from Live/Dead (23.18)
Eligible: single (2.44)
41 Richard and Linda Thompson I Want to See the Bright Lights
Tonight
Has to be from I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight LP
42 Family The Weavers Answer
Probably played the Family Entertainment version
Eligible: The remixed version on Old Songs, New Songs
The BBC session version
43 Jackson Browne Fountain of Sorrow
Has to be from Late for the Sky (6.42)
44 Bob Dylan Hurricane
Fairly sure the single and Desire versions are identical (8.33)
Again may be split single with track across both sides (not sure and
still it would essentially be same version)
45 The Doors Light My Fire
Probably played The Doors LP version (7.06)
Eligible: the truncated single (3.07)
Possibly the radio promo version (4.40). Not sure if this was
available in UK.
46 Matching Mole O Caroline
Has to be from Matching Mole LP (5.05)
47 Roy Harper When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease
Think HQ and single version (7.13) are the same
48 Wild Man Fischer Go to Rhino Records
Has to be the single
49 Little Feat Willin'
Probably version from Sailin' Shoes (2.57). It's the one he favours
for the 78FF run-up.
Eligible: The original version on Little Feat LP (2.24)
50 Yes And You and I
Close to the Edge (10.08)
Eligible: live version on Yessongs (9.33)
Eligible (ish): the US single split the song over two sides. Not
really alternative version!
Look forward to those responses
Regards Bill
