Just listening to a 1979 show where he raves about the new 3rd session from
Siouxsie & The Banshees & Plays "Teenage Kicks"; "Tommy Gun"; "Promises"; "Feed
The Enemy" as well as The Beatles "I want to hold your hand" and even a Thin
Lizzy track! There's a bit of Reggae, but the musical spread is noticably
narrower than in later days - presumably because HipHop, Techno, Drum'n'bass, and
even synth pop hadn't been invented yet! That said is fantastic to hear the
punk stuff in (for most of us) it's original context!
I actually remember hearing this one when it went out - not for the actual
music, but for a couple of links - one where he mentioned a Sheffield Fanzine
that a mate of mine was involved with, and one where his engineer had found him
one of those "Box Of Laughs" toys which made a horrible laughing noise which
would only stop when the batteries are removed - he then uses it throughout the
show whenever he plays a record with a doomy intro - I remember trying to
find one for weeks afterwards!
Quality of this one, and quite a few I've skimmed is pretty good - one or two
I've tried have been almost unlistenable - although no doubt we can make at
least some improvement by digital tarting up.
Damn! It just ran out halfway through a Linton Kwezi Johnson track -
problem is that when you are overwriting "The big wheels of Motown" you only get an
hour or so on the tape - will check to see it the rest is on another one!
Cheers!
