The correct term for this kind of thing is "Guilty
Pleasures", of which I have dozens. I guess the way of
telling in this post-modernist ironic age which
pleasure is actually guilty is - if your pal came in
the room would you switch it off? Answering my own
question, no, I wouldn't switch off the Shadows or
Dusty Springfield, but The Seekers' Carnival is Over
and the Spice Girls Who Do you Think You are might
well be consigned to a discreet muted silence.
   In the same spirit I'm sure some people have two
record collections, the one downstairs which
advertises their immaculate taste and the one in the
loft which they raid in the dead of night. Now, where
did I put Petula Clark's Greatest Hits...
