Dear all,

This coming Tuesday's Another Nice Mess will be 3 hour ''Dedicated to
John Peel'' special, in which I'll be playing songs from cd's/records
which were Dedicated to John Peel on the sleeve. The special is very
much approved of by Louise and Hermeet (''what a great idea"). Plus I'll
be broadcasting excerpts from Peel Day gig in Amsterdam, feat. Suicidal
Birds, Zea, Bong-Ra, Persil and Uw Hond. I'm ashamed to say this way the
ONLY Peel Day gig in the Netherlands......

By the way: If any of you spotted a ''Dedicated to Peel record/cd''
recently, please tell me so (info@...).

Must say I'm a bit disappointed with his record box content (although by
chance I did play two of the songs very recently on ANM: 'Bloody' and
the hilarious cover version of 'YMCA'!). But 5x The White
Stripes.....??!!! A bit over the top.
I spot there is a risk of Peel getting ''proclaimed'' a 'saint'' by some
of us fans. Not only was he the best discjockey ever, but he was also a
human being, a man even, with his own character traits and
likes/dislikes. He had a small spot/fondness for small, cutish women and
that undoubtedly influenced his liking for not only Sheena Easton and
Kylie but also the likes of Altered Images, Laura Cantrell and Melys,
who all didn't (don't) make the most revolutionary kind of music as well
(Ever heard Altered Images' version of Song Sung Blue, with Peel on
guest vocals? Truly awful!)
Of course he had every right to be and do so, but in my view we
shouldn't examine/analyze ALL of his musical choices too deep and/or
held them extremely high. I'm quite certain he wouldn't do so himself.
