My latest love is a format called HE AAC+ V2, it has very good and offers
a lot of compression with out much loss in fidelity. There are at least 3
major players for this format covering the major OSes (winamp, foobar20000,
vlc player, Mac, Winx, Linux) The hard part is finding the encoders, since
the codec is proprietary, but due to the size saving aspect I believe that
they will become more and more common. I did find one over at the
DBPowerAmp site though that worked and was free. Anyroad, if you want some
