PEEL JOINS ROCK HALL OF FAME

Jul 26 2005

JOHN PEEL will be honoured by becoming a member of the UK Music Hall
of Fame - a year after his death.

And the veteran BBC broadcaster's huge collection of records is to be
celebrated in an intimate documentary.

BBC Radio 1's longest-serving DJ died last October at the age of 65,
while on holiday in Peru.

He will receive 2005's Honorary Membership of the UK Music Hall of
Fame for his 'exceptional contribution' to British music.

And a one-hour TV special, researched by his son Tom Ravenscroft,
will be an exclusive insight into the man's private collection, which
dominated his home in Suffolk.

In a small, battered wooden box, he kept a precious selection of
7-inch singles that meant more to him than any others.

The show will reveal the contents of this box and give an amazing
insight into Peel's eclectic tastes, telling the stories behind the
artists and songs.

Former Radio One DJ and Hall of Fame committee member Paul Gambaccini
said: 'I'm thrilled my hero, mentor and friend John Peel has been
named an honorary member.

'He was for many years the most important person in popular music in
the western world.'

Last year, artists including The Beatles, Bob Marley, Elvis Presley
and The Rolling Stones became inaugural members of the UK Music Hall
of Fame.

This year's ceremony will see more music legends honoured including Bob Dylan.
