Festive Fifty 2000

Hmm, no editorial comment on the Festive 50 so far then. How about
this to get us started.

I didn't quite agree with John's comment that 2000 was a great year
for music, although there's been some good stuff out. At one stage
(around no 20 to 30 I think) I was losing interest in the 50 because
it seemed to be dominated by the votes of a bunch of old geezers
who only vote for things David Gedge has done and the Delgados. Now
I like Gedgey as much as the next mid-30s ex-student, but I don't
think everything Cinerama have done is great. Anyway I cheered up
a bit when PJ Harvey started to figure a bit more and was chuffed at
Broadcast getting in (although there are far better tracks), also
Calexico, and Neko Case was a well deserved No 1. Overall though, I
got the feeling that there was a lot of not very new sounding stuff
around on the indie scene. It was all a bit mid 80's in a way.

Anyone surprised at the inclusion of Radiohead? No dance music
featured, as usual, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Unless
you count the bloody Cuban Boys of course. Their Beat the Clock
sampling tune was really lame, I thought. (Apologies to any Cuban
Boys who may be reading.)

Andy
