There is a case for saying that you should be able to vote for live shows
or
sessions rather than specific songs but this is logistically impossible -
the
playing of the FF could wind up around March!
Another possibility is a separate vote - this isn't going to happen
because
Peel likes the idea of sessions and records being mixed.
I am increasingly of the opinion that the suggestion put on this list
(I'm sorry I
can't remember who by) that the voting should be as now but that Peel
should
play the Top 50 randomly and without announcing their position is a good
one.
It would remove most of the incentive for people to rig it.
I think it could be a good idea to email Peel with the suggestion during
one of
the shows - what do people think
The White Boys With Guitars question (henceforth WBWG) - a longterm
complaint
of Peel
The facile view is that this proves Peel is not in touch with his
audience. I don't agree
I think there are a couple of factors that skew it.
The first is familiarity. A track by a WBWG group that is liked
will get airplay on other
R1 shows and other radio stations too. Also people will get the
records, A non-WBWG
track may get played on air only once. No chance to build up
support
Another is that just about all the fanclub/newsletter/pressure group in
sync voting is
for WBWG groups. There is nothing to stop a group like
ILCK going home and lobbying all
their US supporters to vote in the poll - in fact I am sure that happens
with some American
groups. I can't however see T Raumschmiere or The Bug doing
this!
