What about mailman is not as good/reliable as groups.io? Mailman is not really the problem, but it's currently running on a cheap hosted server with slow CPU and disk with no redundancy, managed by a single person. If the disk breaks down I can probably restore the list from a backup, but this takes time and some of the data could be lost too. If there is enough interest I could get a faster VPS with redundant disks, but I may not always have time to manage it or keep it running, so I think groups.io will definately be a longer lasting solution. If we set up a free groups.io Peel group now, I think we can still upgrade to premium and import old messages later. Branko From chrisjbrady@... Fri Nov 1 20:59:54 2019 From: chrisjbrady@... (Stuart Brooks) Date: Sun, 3 Nov 2019 12:36:12 +0000 Subject: Latest 1985 mixtapes Message-ID: That's JG tapes 8, 10, 11, 12 uploaded and 13 wikified and Audacitised, to be uploaded next week. Tape 8 is a departure, in that the inlay was devoid of tracklistings, with Peel (and other presenters) left to fulfil these duties by way of intros/outros. Roughly April May 1985, with some new content, some of which can't be ascribed to a date yet. This tape is more "mixed" than usual with Jon (G) splicing bits in from several source shows, including a Muriel Gray presented Peel show, Andy Kershaw presented Peel Show, and an undated Richard Skinner Saturday Live Show with Jimmy Jimmy in studio. Tape 9 must still be up Jon's loft. Tape 10 jumps ahead to August and September, with some new content from 2nd September, and a slab from an unknown show. It's suspected that the odd record (not from a Peel Show) is making an appearance such as 999. Tape 11 contains extracts from 15th, 16th, 20th 21st and 22nd October, mostly new, and possibly some of the session tracks haven't previously been shared or released. Very early play for Bhundu Boys and possible debut plays for Primal Scream and Half Man Half Biscuit. Tape 12 goes back over some of the same shows of Tape 11, adding further new content, and featuring extracts from Andy Kershaw's first month of his own shows. Tape 13 starts off filling more gaps from the shows shared in tapes 11 and 12, before jumping ahead to November. An obvious record was removed from the file. Jon's Theme song that he added to some of the tapes (which I left in the first couple of times) is Nashville by the Byrds. Eighteen years ago, we combined the functionality of a site called eGroups.com with a precursor community platform called Yahoo Clubs to launch Yahoo Groups. Since then, you and millions of others have helped prove our hypothesis, by creating and joining more than 10 Million groups. A lot has changed about the Internet since 2001, including the ways most people now use Yahoo Groups. Today, most Yahoo Groups activity happens in your email inbox, not on the bulletin boards where Yahoo Groups started in the pre-smartphone age. Increasingly, people want content and connections coming directly to them, and this is why we continue to invest in Yahoo Mail -- including the recent launch of a new Yahoo Mail app that is currently the highest-rated email app in the App Store and Google Play. So, as our users’ habits have evolved, we have begun the process of evolving our approach to help active Yahoo Groups thrive and migrate to our email platform. To help you plan for these changes, below is the schedule of how this transition will happen. Beginning October 28, 2019: Users will be able to join a Yahoo Group only through an invite from the Group Moderator or by submitting a request to join a Group, which requires approval by the Group Moderator. Since we are moving Group communication from posting on message boards to email distribution, uploading and hosting of new content will also be disabled on the Yahoo Groups website. Beginning December 14, 2019: All Groups will be made private and any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed. We believe privacy is critical and made this decision to better align with our overall principles. If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or stored in the past within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing this link. As these dates get closer, we will send follow-up reminders. More information about the upcoming changes can be found here. While this evolution of Yahoo Groups is inspired by how we see the platform being used today, we know change can be difficult. Here are a few important facts as we make this transition: 1. Yahoo Groups is not going away - We know that our users are deeply passionate about connecting around shared interests, and we are evolving Groups to better align with how you use it today. 2. New groups can still be formed - Users can continue to connect with others around their common bonds and interests. From animal rescues to sporting and activity groups, civic organizations to local PTAs, members of our Yahoo Groups will remain connected and able to share their activities and interests. All of the content that you have shared previously on the website, can continue to be shared via email. We know that Yahoo Groups is an important online extension of your real-life group of friends, interests and communities, and we are committed to supporting communities that rely on Yahoo Groups. I asked the moderator what he'd done and this is his reply........ It was all fairly straightforward but you would have to get a move on if you want to shift things along, as you've only got a week before the transfer cut-off point is instigated. Firstly though, you have to be a Moderator of the group you want to transfer. You then to open a group at groups.io. Easily done - go here: https://groups.io/static/pricing https://groups.io/static/pricing Select the membership you want - I started it with Basic and then upgraded (when I was first interested it was only $110 to upgrade from Basic to Premium, but they suddenly increased the price without warning). You'll need to have a Premium account if you want to transfer files/members, though you can downgrade to basic once the transfer has happened. The cost was $220.00 - which as you know I quickly recovered by crowd-funding within the group. Once you've got your Premium account you'll get instructions, but basically you have to invite your new Group to be a moderator of the old Yahoo one by sending an invite to transfer@groups.io mailto:transfer@groups.io. Once the transfer has happened (in our case about four or five days for both) you can remove the new member (transfer@groups.io mailto:transfer@groups.io) from the Yahoo group's membership list. More info is available here: https://groups.io/static/transfer https://groups.io/static/transfer I chose not to transfer the membership on several grounds. The first was privacy - not everyone would necessarily like it if they were made members of a new group they'd perhaps never heard of. The second was that there were just a few people that I didn't really want in the new group - why introduce bits of grit to a smooth-running machine. So, as moderator of the Yahoo Group, I was able to download a copy of the membership list, edit it out a few 'undesirables' and then email people with my own personalised invite or, use the Invite members facility with the new group. I hope that's all clear - it was a lot easier than it sounds! From stuartb@... Wed Nov 20 22:26:28 2019 From: stuartb@... Easily done - go here: https://groups.io/static/pricing Select the membership you want - I started it with Basic and then upgraded (when I was first interested it was only $110 to upgrade from Basic to Premium, but they suddenly increased the price without warning). You'll need to have a Premium account if you want to transfer files/members, though you can downgrade to basic once the transfer has happened. The cost was $220.00 - which as you know I quickly recovered by crowd-funding within the group. Once you've got your Premium account you'll get instructions, but basically you have to invite your new Group to be a moderator of the old Yahoo one by sending an invite to transfer@... Once the transfer has happened (in our case about four or five days for both) you can remove the new member (transfer@...) from the Yahoo group's membership list. More info is available here: https://groups.io/static/transfer I chose not to transfer the membership on several grounds. From chrisjbrady@... Fri Nov 22 11:57:56 2019 From: chrisjbrady@...
