I also managed to win the other three cassettes from the other seller, one is apparently from August 1976, One is his birthday party show 1979 which I think has already been uploaded, the other is a program from 1986 called radio radio, I haven’t listened to it yet. Itis quite obvious that 1979 to 1985 was the most glorious period of Peel! when i am very drunk I think it has something to do with plasticity of brain and role of music in helping to create common emotions in ceremonies for groups of young people (predominantly male) so they come together for common endeavours like hunting, fighting, food gathering and moshing. Sport and religion play a similar role. Thanks very much for your very kind offer of the books, were you thinking of sending me a digital copy? It may well read on my computer, and if not, I might be able to get someone to adapt it so that it will. If you could send me them, it would be amazing, thanks so much! Often if there is existing stuff on wiki they are incomplete shows or without the dulcet tones of Mr Peel or new tapes improve the quality so upload it and let others work out the date. People are able to stitch together whole shows from various tapes. Magic! Not certain about how you could access Ken Garner's books - there are two. If someone sent you copies would you be able to make them readable for you. Happy to do that in recompense for you paying out for all these shows. They go for quite a lot of money as out of print. Wow, that 76 show is one of the best I've heard in my life ! I like every song in it which is unusual for me. Widowmaker were great, nice to hear John compliment singer Steve Ellis (who R. Daltrey said was a better singer than himself). Deaf School (a Liverpool legend/institution) were great (their last LP was their best, a true new-wave gem, criminally under-heard). Be Bop Deluxe (inc Bill Nelson) are a fave band of mine (and Peely's). Peely loves that there is a snippet of himself at the start of the song here ! The Big Pig's 45 was "Legalise It" - does that mean she toked with Peely, ha ha. I'm a huge fan of punk and new-wave but Boston (and esp. "More Than A Feeling") were real pop-rock class and Peely liked their 1st LP at this time. And the CBGB stuff is great - maybe the first time Peely played "punk" - it's very raw in the context of the rest of the show ! Sounds a bit like early Stones. And great audio quality again like it was broadcast last week ! From timgiebel@... Mon Mar 5 19:10:04 2018 From: timgiebel@... I am currently transferring a cassette, one side of which is definitely the 28th of April 1991, but I’m not sure if the other side is the same show or not. The side which has the 28th of April definitely, has the 11:30 news, a few minutes in. The other side doesn’t have any news break, my original theory was that this unknown side could actually be side 1 of the same show. Sorry for my rambling, I’m not sure if that really makes sense, but basically what I wanted to know was what time the show began in April 91. I then got a surprise when I went to Tape 221 and found it jumped ahead to November 1998! So I decided to catalogue the remaining tapes from the 4.5 boxes. So, it turns out there are three numbering systems and I've just finished one of them. Lee's Tape No 1 to Lee's Tape 216 - December 1987-April 1994. (Done, apart from a few missing, some of which have cropped up in later boxes and will be ripped) Lees N1 to N45, 46-309 January 1995-Jan 2000 (nothing for the rest of 1994) Then the numbering system restarts at 229, to 327 Jan 2000 on Then the tapes with unedited shows, lots of C120s, split between 2 Miscellaneous boxes So, the numbers for the Wiki - 1-216 as they are, then 217-505 for N1-309 then (roughly) 506-613 for 229-327 then (roughly) 614 onwards for the miscellaneous unlabelled tapes containing complete shows. The Original Lee Tape 3 is in fact from the second No 3 so it's been moved to Lee Tape 219, and the real Lee Tape 3 has no Peel content. The tape I recorded from 1998, is now Lee Tape 443, just uploaded today. The 1998 tape contains just over half an hour from two new shows, 1st December and 24th November 1998, and from already available show 10th December 1998. The first show has some Peel gems, including him imitating his 1980s self, and discussing his OBE with Mary Anne Hobbs. The tape itself is a surprisingly good Amstrad, and is a sound upgrade for the 10th December show. Tape here Stuart From M.Luetchford@... Wed Mar 14 09:21:04 2018 From: M.Luetchford@... He was having pre-dinner drinks at the lobby bar of the Monasterio Hotel, when he suffered a coronary attack at around 9pm local time on Monday evening. He received cardio-pulmonary resuscitation at the scene but died later in hospital. In a telephone interview, Peel's wife said he had been "perfectly fine" before the attack: "We'd been walking around and he was okay until it happened." They were on a three-week holiday and had planned to visit the ruins at Machu Picchu before returning to London on Sunday." I wondered whether the lobby bar was there when you visited? Didn't see it in the photos. I would understand why a hotel would not put a plaque to say someone died of a heart attack, it may put off guests or visitors from the place. Also Peel was mainly known in the UK and not so much outside it, so there wouldn't be any point putting a plaque, when most of the guests wouldn't have heard of him. From M.Luetchford@...
