I was thinking of why I loved listening to the John Peel show. He helped me through what I found to be the most difficult of my years (so far). I was a confused and alienated teen and the man made me feel special. He played music that helped me work out what I was and even made me part of the awkward cool kids who were alternative. talking to them about what he played the night before. nme reviews. Going to jigs. being intellectual about music and politics. Not certain if that was the same for others. Was it just an early 80s thing. He did it effortlessly and maybe that is because his love of music also did the same for him - helped him cope with a weird and confusing world . maybe this is a bit heavy for emails Is there a part of wiki where people can answer "what listening to  John Peel meant to them?" Might be intetesting.

Haven't listened yet but an essential for me would be roots reggae and an affability with his audience that is not patronising nor commercialised.
