I heard the "then punk happened and overnight Peel's playlist changed" nonsense uttered again by Mary Ann Hobbs on the introduction to the Peel segment on the Radio 1 Vintage programmes the other week. It's a head banging against the wall moment.

I think history tries to paint
some great dividing moment and that Peel "went full
punk" and never looked back, but in actual fact it was
as much to do with the Friday Rock Show starting in 1978 and
therefore he didn't have to cover the classic rock end
of the spectrum any more. For the first year or so of the
FRS they were repeating rock Peel sessions from the
archives. The BBC obviously felt that there was enough
material and room in the schedules to have two shows
covering two styles. I don't know how much Peel had to
do with that decision, but probably not a lot!

Many thanks, Tim. I've just heard the Sept 1977 show and
it's great ! Very good audio quality as well, which is a
real plus. Funny how Peely refuses to play the Heart song
but later plays the Cate Brothers which seems to be very
similar musically (maybe worse, Heart weren't that bad -
check out "Barracuda"). Nice that he plays Sad
Café (Tony Wilson was a huge fan apparently). I like the
mix of new and old wave, with a few "inbetweenies"
like Motorhead, the Motors and possibly Thin Lizzy. Three
years later, the show would be totally devoid of any
"old school" rock unless listed in the NME list of
new-wave-friendly acts eg Iggy Pop. I certainly don't
think he'd have played the Cates in 1980 ! I'm sure
Peely played a tribute to Lowell George in 1979 and said how
good he was, even though Little Feat were surely the epitome
of the sort of music that caused Punk rock to happen. Funny
 old world, Saint....
