Starting off with the Gumtree tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Gumtree_Tapes_(tapes), and some new content for one of the latest incomplete shows, 4th September 2001. Not having listened to a more recent show for some time, it's again very noticeable the difference in production style, both as a DJ (fading himself in at the start and end of records without fading them out, in a Zane Low fashion) and the slightly harsher, more compressed studio sound compared to the natural sounds of the late 70s/early 80s shows.
On to the Lee Tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Lee_Tapes and tapes 5 to 8 take us from February to April 1988, concentrating on hiphop and house with the odd splash of reggae and experimental. Goes well with watching the Get Down on Netflix! Again John's un-erring ear for the cream of every genre comes to the fore, with some early plays for De La Soul, Coco Steel & Lovebomb, and Kaos, one of whose very limited edition 7" that John played was the highest-priced record sale in Discogs in December 1986. Thanks to JP3904 for filling in a few of the unknowns, there are a few left for the keen sleuth! And JP3904's efforts at the British Library have helped date some of these tracks.
Thanks also to Lee and the unknown Gumtree taper!
Stuart
