I always thought he must have stolen the name from the readers' letters section of the Daily Mail.

Having since visited Wells, in Somerset, I can tell you it has done nothing to dispel me of this theory, it is exactly the sort of place that angry men of a certain age and political outlook pen angry letters to the DM from.

Yes, Swells got his name from there. Amusingly there was another younger ranter called Tim Wells who used to call himself Teething Wells.

Who may be remotely interested but reading a book about The Thames and discovered that there used to be some wells near Chelsea called Seething Wells. This nugget may even stretch your lots interest too far ...
