Demos, Peel, Evening session, TV, it's all here. In no particular order Tape 26 started off with a rare 1978 demo from Luxound Deluxe. Next a complete rarity, Milan Station's only session from its repeat broadcast on 10th August 1981 (also the first share for that date). Then Repetition's only session from the 17th August, a much better sound than the 400 Box share for that date. Finally Bamboo Zoo's only session from 3rd September 1981, a new show, and the only version of the session on the wiki. Even the tape was rare, a TDK OD60 (never saw these in the shops myself). Tape 22 kicks off with 1919's debut play of their 2nd session, broadcast on 31st May 1983. This adds a track, and quality to the remaining three, to the 400 Box share of that day. Next, a demonstration of a key advantage to living in London in the 80s, the Evening Session in VHF! So, here is Dead Or Alive's final session for the BBC, Kid Jensen session as broadcast on 1st June 1983. Attn Steve SIG - the next bit of the tape is an extract from the Friday Rock Show, where Tommy plays the three tracks that remain from the 1970 Sounds Of The 70s session. Back to Peel and the complete Xmal Deutschland 2nd session from new show 27th June 1983. Kid Jensen returns with Gene Loves Jezebel's session as broadcast on 30th June. Then onto the Peel show of the same night, and a new show, with Clock DVA's only session, complete. Only previously partially available on the wiki from one of my own tapes from a later repeat. Tape 17 (my own number as the tape had no number and there are no 17s in the box) and yet another airing for the now ubiquitous Joy Division sessions, as rebroadcast on new show 1st September 1983. I remember the excitement of taping these sessions from this show at the time (having been late to the whole Peel/JD thing) then the pain of losing the tape.... I must check my old Collins page a day diary to see if there was anything else from the tracklistings to add to the wiki page. A B-Movie Skinner session from 1981. The Wake's only session from its repeat on new show 9th August 1983, is followed with a Skinner repeat of a 1982 Bauhaus session and a couple of TV tracks from Mystery Girls. Tape 18 starts with the 1983 Skinner session by The Cure, not commercially released. Then an archive Skinner Killing Joke session from 1981. The rest of the tape is all Peel - first Gene Loves Jezebel from new show 26th September 1983, Cocteaus from new show 4th October, most of SPK from 8th November in unprecedented quality, (my version was mono), Dead Can Dance from 15th December 1983 (already shared but that page needs tidying) and finally a couple from Sophie & Peter Johnson from 22nd December 1983 (show already complete from Stewart tapes). (all of these Peel sessions featured in my own 1983 mixtapes) Finally for now, Tape 20. This caused me a bit of panic, as it was the first one I ripped with the repaired Nakamichi, and side 1 sounded very tapey, until I realised that the tape was already a tape to tape transfer. So, first off, a demo from the Atoms, direct from the band to Kev, followed by a presumably traded / swapped Cure session as recorded from 10th January 1979, but still a sound upgrade to the 400 Box share plus an extra track. Tougher competition for the Lene Lovich tape from 2nd January 1979 as that show was partially available from the redoubtable Derby Box, but to save the day, a full version of the track Home is now available. We're then back to FRS land with a repeat of Van Der Graaf Generator session. A slight mystery unfolds here with the selection of tracks presented not matching any individual session in Ken's book, so perhaps a pick and mix approach was employed. Sound quality ramps back up to KevH quality so this must be a first gen recording. The Newtown Neurotics session referred to in the last thread now becomes real, from new show 5th April 1983, a first share for that date and for the N-Ns. The promised missing JCC track from his 1982 session is tackled on at the end. Between the above two bands, a TV appearance by the Damned, a mic to TV recording, with the band trying to sound more like VDGG than NN..... Phew that took a while to write. I did have tape 16 lined up too but it seems the upload to the Mooo cut off before completion - I hope I haven't filled it up again. Feedback welcomed..... and many thanks to KevH once again! The remaining tapes TR086 to TR098 contained a mixture of non-Peel content and previously shared shows. Mostly from 2002, but one from 1999 and one of the posthumously broadcast shows from 2004. I hadn't appreciated that there were 3 pre-recorded World Service shows that aired after his death (as his regular shows had guest DJs while he was in Peru). Details are on the wiki page http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Tom_Roche_BBC_World_Service_Tapes I didn't upload any of the rips to Mooo for space reasons, as they are all previously available. If anyone wants these particular versions then let me know. Many thanks to Tom for keeping the tapes and organising their trans-atlantic holiday, it's been a pleasure. Tape 16 starts with Action Pact from already available show 22nd February 1982, then Theatre Of Hate's third from 11th May 1982, adding a track to that show. Next Au Pairs from new show 22nd April 1982, and UB40s 2nd from already available show 27th April 1982. Finally (Shambeko Say) Wah!'s third session, from 18th May 1982, new for that show, and the first recording of the silly version of You'll Never Walk Alone on the wiki. Tape 19 begins with the complete Luddites only session, from new show 19th October 1983 (only 1 track is available from its repeat). Then on to probably 19th January 1984 for New Model Army's only session, a new section of that show. It's not 100% clear that it is from this show though, but more likely, from John's comments. Next In Excelsis from new show 28th February 1984, finally Alien Sex Fiend, another version of the session from 15th May 1984. Tape 27 starts with Danse Society's first evening show session, listed as a Jensen session in Ken's book, but it is definitely Richard Skinner presenting on the 12th April 1983, who seems unaware that the band had a string of singles before this. Rebel Da Fe's only session follows from new Peel show of the same night. More proto-goth follows with March Violets' 3rd session from new show 19th April 1983 (first time on the wiki for this session). Then its Blood and Roses from the 26th, previously shared by Kev on its own. Another outing for Bauhaus' debut, this time from new show 2nd May 1983, and Brigandage from the 18th, also previously shared by Kev. Tape 32 features Southern Death Cult's only session from its repeat on new show 6th July 1982, then Danse Society from new show 13th September 1982, the session only previously available from Karl's tape on its repeat. Send No Flowers' only session from new show 27th September 1982 (a first share for this session?) Another rarity follows, Brilliant's debut of their only session from 8th November 1982, then another new show, the 11th November with Sex Gang Children's debut. Tape 36 a bit shorter, and older, kicking off with Martian Dance, already shared by KevH individually, Killing Joke probably from 29th December 1980, then Ski Patrol from 12 May 1981, adding a track for that show. Tape 37 begins with In Camera's full repeat of their only session, from the repeat on 26th January 1981, a new show, and adding a track to the earlier incomplete share of the debut play. For the first time on the wiki the full Missing Presumed Dead session from 2nd February 1981. then Modern Eon from the 5th, new for that show and adding a track to the only other wiki share of that session. Another version of the Comsat Angels session on the 9th follows, and we wrap up this week's share with Dead Or Alive's debut play of their first session from the 17th, mostly new for that show, and how us Peelites will remember the band. I like the premise and the way it’s set up, but there are a couple of other reasons. Firstly, I always found the pieces you used to write for the NME amusing, David, and trust that some of that humour will have spilled over into the book. Secondly, living as I do in South Wales you might not expect me to know who (what?) Gus Honeybun is (or was), but my grandparents lived in Bovey Tracey in the 1960s and I still recall being taken with my parents on one occasion to visit some friends of theirs in Topsham, where the man of the house, in an attempt to keep me and my brother amused, turned on the television and proclaimed, “Oh look, it’s Gus Honeybun!” I don’t recall being over-impressed even at six years of age, but clearly the name stuck! One thing I noticed in the draft of chapter one: in the paragraph in which you introduce the character of Roger Armstrong you call him Armstrong Armstrong. Is that meant to be heavily ironic (in view of his background and the predilection of public school types to call each other by their surnames only), or is it just an error? Obviously this was building on the work of the giants who went before me, who had already playlisted everything from the digitised recordings, and I'd say it was already over 90% complete by the time I started. I'm pleased to announce now that every track from every 1993 Radio 1 Peel Show is now listed on the Peel Wiki. That's not to say that the record is entirely complete (there are a few "place holders" with question marks in place of artist and details) but we now have an entry of some kind for every track played, and in the overwhelming majority of cases the details are complete. Hopefully this will make it easier to identify any fresh audio that emerges for 1993. The process did uncover a small number of misdated plays and at one point 23 October was briefly left with no associated audio, but Stuart has been following my progress and stepped up to the mark so that every show in 1993 now had at least some audio (in most cases a lot). So yes, very different from later years. The shows he was presenting on WRR were all Blues records, so if anyone is expecting Elvis or Bill Haley or even Roy Orbison in the playlist, I think they'll be very disappointed. On the seller's copy, he mentioned that it was a 1962 Paul Carroll show featuring guest DJ John Ravenscroft playing blues records. Unless I'm mistaken there was a Bill Carroll who presented Kats Karavan on WRR, so the Paul Carroll could be a wrong name. If this is the real thing, then this show is either the following: 1) The debut appearance of Peel on radio where he talked about his Blues collection on Carroll's show OR 2) Carroll may not have been well on that day to do his show therefore Peel could have been the replacement on that occasion. I bought it largely because of the great name, and it was on a label I hadn't heard of that was based in the town next to mine - Bold Reprieve Records - and has sleeve notes by Siggy jackson who was the man behind the famous Blue Beat label. Don't regret it a mix of ska and soul ... played by a tight band. can imagine them playing in late 60s crowds of mods and jamaican rude boys as in Absolute Beginners. Very little on line about them or the label and then I found a blog about a band called Demon Fuzz that revealed that they came from said Maroons and lo and behold they did a Peel session/concert! They (apparently) moved away from ska towards jazz/arabic/world (before it existed) music and produced one album called Afreaka http://www.waxpoetics.com/blog/features/articles/demon-fuzz/ Based on an interview with one of the bands members called Paddy Corea: "By 1970, racism in the UK was less obvious, but still clear and present in the music industry. “There was and probably still is difference based on race in the music business in England,” says Corea. “It wasn’t blatant but it was there. Black bands were paid less by club owners and were asked to work twice as long. We found that local Black musicians in England at that time were not taken seriously and just simply taken for granted. We wanted to change the style, sound, image, and attitude of Black music and Black musicians in England.” Thankfully, there was John Peel, a forward-looking DJ at the BBC. “We did his Sunday, repeated Wednesday [show],” recalls Crosdale. “We played lived at the Paris Studios. We played about four numbers. I think we played ‘I Put a Spell On You.’ I remember when we did the Hollywood Festival, [Peel] used to write for the Melody Maker, or one of those. I used to have the article, and he said, ‘Superb, superb, superb.’ Now if John Peel says that…” So there was John again demonstrating his support for they are listed on the 1971 Concert page but there is a stern notice asking me not to add info about band - so I haven't! now if anyone can tell me why this was re-release in 1988 by a label based in Hythe Kent I would be grateful... they also released Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, reg Kray and some Canadian heavy metal ... a mystery. The address of the label is a chemists and it appears to have been formed by someone called Miki Dallon who appears to have had an interesting careeer http://www.verygoodplus.co.uk/showthread.php/5118-MIKI-DALLON-my-hero-and-veteran-of-underground-uk-music-recordings/page2?s=c0debad590483bdcb259e652ae5bb512 Anyway - as I said all roads lead to Mr Peel. From: lorcan58@... [peel] Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2017 2:09 PM To: peel@yahoogroups.com Subject: [peel] 1993 Hi Guys, I've spent the last two months armed with handwritten playlists (supplied by Tim Joseph back in the noughties) filling in all the gaps in the Peel Wiki listings for 1993. My slow progress stands in sharp contrast to the massive throughput from other members of this group, to whom I am eternally grateful. This was followed by a Steel Pulse repeat from Mark Ellen's stand in on 22nd June, adding some SQ and outros to the existing Stewart Tapes edited version. Dislocation Dance's second session follows, this split over its two plays on its debut on 14th July (adding a track and some SQ) and new show 4th August 1982. The Cocteau Twins debut with links is captured for the first time with links from new show 15th July 1982. Finally another debut, another new show, March Violets from 2nd August 1982. Tape 40 moves on to 1983 and a repeat of Xmal Deutschland's first from new show 14th February 1983. In a 4AD heavy week it's the Cocteau Twins from another new show 15th February 1983. A rare session from Virgin Dance from 17th March 1983, adding to that show. Then it's Big Country from new show 6th April 1983. A rare evening session Sisters Of Mercy roadcast on 11th April 1983 follows, then another evening session, Bauhaus. Tape 44 starts with the Slits third session, as repeated on new show 12th November 1991, which despite being only three tracks long, amounts to almost a quarter of that show. Danse Society's first follows, 3 tracks from its debut on 30th November (1 new track) and 1 from its repeat on 17th December. Then it's Killing Joke and their 4th from its repeat on 12th January 1982, adding a track to the Derby Box share. Then it's Kev's own request session, The Models, as broadcast on 12th January 1982. Previously shared separately by Kev, but perhaps from a dubbed version from a later tape, whereas this is the master and sounds really clear. Finally from the 13th, its Drowining Craze only session, from the debut on 13th January 1982, and an addition to the solitary track previously available from this show. Tape 52 starts with a Rock On section with Southern Death Cult in studio chat and record play on Rock On, with probably Mark Ellen compering, then a New Order interview and record selection from thre Rock On from 12th March 1993, this time with what sounds like Richard Skinner. Then it's a Play Dead session, the debut of their second session as broadcast on 23rd June 1983, a new show. This brings me in mind of a completely unfeasible scene from Brookside in which Paul, an older-middle aged conservative character claims to like some of the modern bands such as "Play Dead". Earlier uses of the tape then gain their place in the spotlight, with a snippet from 31st May 1983 (just 3 new seconds) Then the last 6 minutes or so of the 4th November 1982, a new section of that show and including a session track from the Twinsets. Finally for now from the KevH Tapes, #55 started off with a dubbed copy of the Models session so was left out. Next Rubella Ballet from 6th July 1982, adding to the earlier Kev share of Southern Death Cult from this show. Then it's on to the debut of Sisters Of Mercy's first session, from 7th September 1982, adding to the 35 second share for this show! A rare appearance of a record from an unknown Peel show, presumably November 1982, then the tape ends with Pink Industry's session from 1st December 1982, that show already complete but the session now in KevH quality. As usual Peel outros and some intros are included. I also started on a small collection of tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Gumtree_Tapes_(tapes) that Rocker got from Gumtree. From Tape 1, we now have a 47 minute section of new show 7th September 1988, with a couple of Too Much Texas session tracks. On Tape 2 the BBC World Service show from 18th March 1993, and a 47 minute section of the Radio 1 show from the 19th, adding 11 minutes to that show. Tape 3 contained most of the World Service show from 15th June 1993, a sound upgrade to the Tom Roche short wave version, which was dated as the 14th June. Both recordings are likely to have been the 0330GMT broadcast on the 15th (but still the 14th in the USA). On side 2 was the WS show of the 29th June 1993, a new show. If anyone Mooo-browsing has already downloaded the Gumtree shows, or KevH tape 55, then please redownload them or check it is the same version. This includes a slightly improved sound quality, edited 37 minutes from the 400 Box show of 9th July 1980, plus 17 minutes of 3rd July 1980, previously only tracklisted. The files are available here along with a bit of a Paul Gambaccini show, in which he appears to be playing session tracks from Sham 69 an X-O-Dus reggae track and a Damned track. Not sure what programme this might be, as his Saturday afternoon show at the time was based on the American scene. I should maybe have said 20-ish years, but it existed for… well, a while on a different setup - egroups (and I’d be surprised if you weren’t part of that). Unless Yahoo ported the old data over? Spear Of Destiny's only session from 14th December 1982 adds SQ to that complete show. Sisters of Mercy's debut makes another appearance in the F50 show of 21st December, adding to the availability of that show, as do Dance Society's on the 27th and Southern Death Cult's on the 30th. Finally a couple of tracks from Rubella Ballet's second session from new show 8th February 1983. (I was quite re-converted to early Goth after all that!) The final KevH Tape 72 (wonder what was on 63-71?) contained both sessions from new show 19th May 1983, Skeletal Family then a Magazine repeat. Damned, Slits and Buzzcock repeats from Mark Ellen's May sit in week rounds off the collection, show dates unknown. KevH tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/KevH_Tapes_(tapes). A couple from the Gumtree Tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Gumtree_Tapes_(tapes), first a mostly new section of 25th June 1993, and a newly stereo version of half of 7th May 1994. Now possibly the biggest project begins, the Lee Tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Lee_Tapes! These were semi-sorted and numbered by Lee, though as the tape inlays are blank this must have been difficult, so they start off in a semi-random order. The first two are from December 1987, and feature a mix of on-the-fly pause button edits of Mike Allen's National Fresh Hiphop show, which ran from 1986-88, as rebroadcast on Viking Radio, in quite good quality, plus tape to tape edits of mainly dance/hiphop experimental and reggae from the Peel Shows, which don't sound quite so good (so a little bit of a stylistic and technical jump from the KevH tapes!). What I've done is separate out the Peel stuff, created pages based on these and Mooo'ed the audio, but kept a copy of the full audio to send to Lee when I return the tapes. If anyone is desperate to hear the unedited versions then I could put them up on the Mooo for a limited time. The third tape is from 1995, and is a more traditional Peel compilation from January to February 1995, all I did was change the order very slightly as it seemed to be recorded from about 20 minutes in to side 1 with two tape flips and ending at the same point on side 1. Removing the wraparound resulted in a chronological sequence. Some new content and the sound is also better than the 1987 tapes. Stuart From stuartb@... Mon Feb 27 15:11:50 2017 From: stuartb@...
