As folks might be aware Nic was involved in a serious car crash many years ago on his way home from a gig. One Dave Bulmer, who owned the copyright to his albums (except Penquin Eggs) refused to allow Nic to re-issue these to fund his rehab. Bulmer has since died, but his relatives are still being obstinate over Nic's material. Meanwhile the master tapes are likely languishing in some warehouse. This is all documented on Mudcat.org So there is a widespread search of remaining Beeb recordings featuring Nic to pass onto to him. The Peel Sessions are specifically sought after. Thanks - Chris B. Then the tape mangled itself which after splicing means the loss of about 20 seconds of Pink Floyd - luckily there was nothing on the b side. Anyway I have speeded up the previous rip as best I could so that Suspended Sentence runs for 2.53 and uploaded it. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Byqv6lLQOdT6QTNGM2UyQV85dVE/view?usp=drivesdk I then decided to create a new cassette from the rip, got a tape that seemed to have rubbish on it and recorded the first side. Great news that you've been able to book two trips to the BBC written archives. There's a few track listings that would benefit from being completed, or having gaps filled in. There's a few puzzles it would be nice to have solved. Here's my list: 1. 24 May 1979 Strange edit after the first track. Was something omitted? 2. 11 December 1979 The last ten minutes of this shared tape are most likely not from this show. Would be good to confirm it. The tracks appear to be from March / April 1980 instead (see below). 3. 13 November 1980 Heavily edited tape / show. 4. 02 March 1981 Would be good to have full listing to confirm my suspicion that the tracks at the start of the listing attributed to this date are not from to (actually from later in the year). 5. 16 April 1981 To confirm if the tracks from my "Dr Mango Tape1 (mixtape)" are all from this date. 6. 21 March 1990 To create an active link for the football reference I added to the "Matched Mentioned" page (sourced from my recording of the Senseless Things Peel session that night). 7. 20 October 1991 A heavily edited track listing. Would be good to have it complete. 8. 06 November 1992 Would be good to have the full listing to confirm my suspicion that Peel may have played the Attack single. Or not. There's plenty of other shows that are incomplete, but these are just some that sprang to mind. March / April 1980 shows The three tracks tacked onto the recording of the 11 December 1979 show seem to come from late March or April 1980, as the Madness track is from their "Work, Rest & Play" EP. Peel started to play this in late March. Having surveyed the March / April 1980 listings, the following shows / track listings are incomplete. Again, would be very handy if you could get the full listings to try and pin down the broadcast date: 24 March 1980 (final 45 mins missing). 25 March 1980 (full tracklisting claimed but appears to be final 30 mins missing). 2 April 1980 (45 mins currently available). 3 April 1980 (final 90 mins missing). 7 April 1980 (first hour only is available) 10 April 1980 (final 15 mins missing). 16 April 1980 (No show info whatsover) 17 April 1980 (No show info whatsover) 23 April 1980 (No show info whatsover) 24 April 1980 (No show info whatsover) 28 April 1980 (No show info whatsover) Looking forward to your findings, DM From dr_mango2004@... It seems apparent that this wasn't the first time Peel had played it. Listings for the following shows from the start of January 1979 are currently missing or incomplete. Again, if you could oblige... 2 January 1979 - missing about 2 tracks by the look of it. 3 January 1979 - no show details at all 4 January 1979 - no show details at all 8 January 1979 - seems to be complete but would be good to have confirmation. While I remember, the F50 shows for 1980 are only sparsely listed. The session repeats are unknown. This would be a great opportunity to fill in the gaps: 22 December 1980 (45 mins only documented) 23 December 1980 (45 mins only documented) 24 December 1980 (39 mins only documented) 29 December 1980 (seems to be complete, stray track may be missing) Speaking of the F50, the listings for 24 December 1979 and 27 December 1979 are bitty and would benefit from clarification. However, there is no guarantee that I can fill all the 1979/80 shows, as there is so many and don't forget I also got the other years as well. Even if I did one show per month of each year, it will be over 200. And also I have to find out from there, whether I can take pics of the tracklistings. If they don't allow it, it's going to be difficult to get as many. I'm hoping if they allow photos, I could get perhaps 200 (maybe it's too ambitious!!) on one day, because I will be there between 10am and 5pm. Also I've got the advantage of a second visit two days later, which will add more. I've never done this before and I'll be going there for the first time. I have to take account of the time for the BBC Written Archives to bring the tracklistings. I have no idea whether the tracklistings are on a computer or on loose pieces of paper. As long as I run it more frequently than once a month (i.e. while the shows are still on iPlayer), I never miss anything. In practice, I run it roughly once a week. It saves an awful lot of faff. In the case of FZ I'd set it up to match anything with "Freak" and "Zone" in the name using a so-called "regular expression". It's not perfect of course: if the show had gone through a radical name change, my script wouldn't have found it. But as long as I check what new files have been created after each run of the script, I can usually see if anything's missing. I can post the script up if anyone wants. It's a Windows batch file, but I've also written a bash equivalent for Linux. It would be quite easy to translate into PowerShell as well. Hello all, BTW! I've been lurking but haven't posted in a while. I'm currently renting after a relocation, and my tapes and other Peel stuff are in boxes until we're ready to move. Missed it at the time (I think) but heard it on an early 90's Indie compilation CD. Brilliant song with one of the most extreme false endings in rock history, would surely have foxed a lazy DJ ! Good old Peely gives a brief description of the theme of the song (ie who was Mr Thomas). Some great reggae (more than usual perhaps) on the show. Not keen of the Scritti Politti session tbh, but I love their song from 1981, "The Sweetest Girl" (which was on the free NME cassette of that year). Strange to hear Peely say the "n" word, in the context of a record by N***** Kojak, don't think that would happen now, maybe rightly so. However, Peely does comment that a reggae song with dodgy lyrics would not be appreciated by feminists (an understatement in today's context). Social history and great, varied music - what's not to like ? Thanks again to everyone involved in sharing these gems... From koogy@... Thu Aug 31 18:13:07 2017 From: koogy@... (koogy@...) The Evolution of John Peel [1] "Ever since he came off the pirate ships and joined Radio 1 in 1967, John Peel was a champion of new, exciting and occasionally challenging music like no other DJ. Today BBC Radio 6 Music lives on in that pioneering spirit, with its presenters continuing the passion and love he showed for new music. Mary-Anne Hobbs presents the first show in this five-part series, which this week covers the 1970s. Highlights include Tyrannosaurus Rex performing live for John at the BBC Paris Theatre at the turn of the decade, a legendary Peel session from Joy Division, reggae and roots from Culture, Swedish punk from Attentat, and the band Peel frequently cited as the best in the world, The Undertones." http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0940wlb starts Sunday 13:00 andy Links: ------ [1] http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0940wlb
