From stuartb@... Sun Sep 4 18:27:59 2016 From: stuartb@... (stuartb@...) Date: 04 Sep 2016 09:27:59 -0700 Subject: Some more L tapes Message-ID: L471a began with the end of the Peel show of the 13th August, which was combined with the preceding section of the show from L473b into one file. Another earlier portion of the 13th was also found on L473a. Both these files are new content, and apart from news and tape flip edits, appear to complete the show. L471 featured two separate sections of the Andy Kershaw show of 14th August 1993, the one featuring Loudon Wainwright III who performed live on both his and the following Peel show. Side a is already uploaded but an upload error means that side b won't be available for a few days. L471b ended with a bit of that Peel show of the 14th, uploaded. L472 contained two sides of 6th August, only side a has been shared so far. Side b was combined with the last segment of the show (which is new) found on L470, but the same upload error means it won't be available for a few days. L474 was good news for OOBS fans, a couple of shows there. L475 then completed the Peel show of 14th August, with a part of an OOBS show for good measure. L476 contained two partially new sections of the 20th August, while L477 and part of L478 provided some SL content for the 21st, that show already complete from the 500 Box. More overlappery from the rest of L478 with a section of 3rd September 1993, and L479a with a side of 4th September 1993. L479b was a side of 10th September 1993, that show already complete from the 500 Box. L480 was an empty box, but the track listing shows that it contained a side of the Andy Kershaw show of 11th September and a side of the already complete Peel show from later that day . Perhaps the tape will turn up separately... L481 contained two 40 minute sections from mostly new show 17th September 1993 (a few tracks including the full Curve session were previously available from one of my own mixtapes). Side b of L481 had quite a few speed problems - like an earlier Bush cassette, it was playing on average about 5% too fast (and was annotated as such by Steve), which I compensated for with my tape deck speed control, but in reality the speed had been varying during the recording phase, which is still audible. I think that these Bush cassettes must have been of poor construction and Steve's JVC Ghettoblaster (which from other label comments seems to have been what the SL tapes were recorded with) must have had trouble pulling through at the proper speed. I'm now carrying on with these listings, but the major news is that Eddie also has the tapes! After introducing him to the delights of the Mooo the first two 1979 shows have now appeared, and these are in good quality FM stereo. Many thanks to Eddie, JP3904 and Branko. L481 contained 2 sides of virtually new show 17th September 1993, with Curve and Pitchshifter in session. L482 contained the missing two sides of 24th September 1993. These have been combined with L377 to create a complete show file (minus news). Mega City 4, Sebadoh. L483a supplied the final side of 25th September, new. L483b was combined with a side of L490 to form a continuous 86 minute AK show of 2nd October 1993. L484 featured two separate bits of the Andy Kershaw show of 25th September 1993, plus the first 14 minutes of the Peel show of the same date, completing that show. L485 contained the missing side of 9th October 1993, also completing that show, with side b dedicated to the penultimate Out On Blue Six. Another couple of OOBS show sections on L486, but these are short with much of this tape blank. L487 contained two contiguous sides of Andy Kershaw Show of 30th October 1993, in stereo, unlike earlier SL tapes. Either Steve has moved house to somewhere with better reception or has got new kit. TGU in session. L488b was combined with L494a to form another 90 minute AK Show, this time for the 16th October. L488a was some AM documentary, not shared. L489a contained a side of AK Show of 13th November 1993, with the last 10 of the show on L489b forming a separate file. L489b concluded with the first 35 minutes of the Peel show of the same date, only 2 minutes of which are new but are a substantial sound upgrade on the Pates Tapes version of the same show. The rest of L490 provides 3 files from 2nd October 1993, completing that file. The short two minute file seems to slot in to a tape flip in an earlier share L322 where a 2 minute spoken section on the activities of the Antiwar Foundation was for some reason excised... Date: 27 Sep 2016 16:03:16 -0700 Subject: L tapes into the 500s Message-ID: L491 contained an Angolan documentary, to be filed in the "I'll digitise one day when life isn't too short" binnacle. L492a L493b and L494b all contained sections of 16th October 1993, which were combined with my earlier L368 rip from that date to provide a complete show, almost exclusive to the Lowman Tapes. L493a was a doc, not shared. L495 and L496 were dedicated to the complete show of 22nd October 1993, previously almost complete from the 500 Box, but now including the very end of, and the handover from, the final Friday Rock Show. L497a included a side of 29th October 1993, already shared. L497b contained a side of the Mark Tonderai show, hopefully an experimental tape of the new BBC 24-hour 1FM schedule not to be repeated. L498a is 45 minutes of the last ever Out On Blue Six while L498b is a Mixing It. L499 contained a side and a half of the Andy Kershaw show of 29th October 1993, the first Saturday afternoon show and was combined with the recently shared L487 to form a complete show in one file. Transglobal Underground, DL Menard & Eddie Le Jeune in session. L499b also contained the start of the first Saturday afternoon Peel show which was then combined with the earlier shares of L381 and L383 to form a complete show, though no actual new content here. Sides of L500, L501 and L502 were combined to form a 110 minute share of 6th November 1993, while L501 and L502 were combined to form a 105 minute share of the Kershaw show of the same date. L503 was dedicated to 19th November 1993, with a couple of mostly newly available side, these were combined with an earlier share of L382 to form a newly complete show. Finally for now, L506 provided a couple of discrete sections of the AK Show of 20th November. L492b was shared but contains a bit of 3rd December 1993, which I will later combine with L500b and some forthcoming tapes. L504 and L505 are still to come. They also did a session for the Kid so other tracks are scattered about the wiki ... and you may find other gems from early 80s if you keep listening to the BFBS shows. B Movie - Remembrance Day. Astral Joe - Cuddly Toys. Its Immaterial - A Gigantic Raft (in the Philipines) (later had a hit with Driving Away From Home). In the country - Farmers Boys. ... The list could go on ... Really nice to hear Peely play "Revolutionary Spirit" by the Wild Swans, maybe the best indie song of the year. First heard it on a 1982 Indie compilation cd and very topical this week of the Labour party conference of course! From robfleay@... Fri Sep 30 09:57:45 2016 From: robfleay@... But "Revolutionary Spirit" certainly sounded like a cross between Joy Division and the Bunnymen, a true classic. For that they should be very proud. The band It's Immaterial (great name) were also from Liverpool, must check out the song mentioned, it will probably come back to me. China Crisis (also from Liverpool) were similar - I've not heard anything by them to match the nice "Black Man Ray". Likewise the Lotus Eaters and Black (RIP). Is it a Liverpool thing? Only joking, it's quite common. Even Bunnymen stuff sounds quite dated these days, although the early stuff I heard on Peel was/is good eg "Over The Wall". I've always thought that the best Liverpool music 78 to 80's was the first Teardrops album (still sounds fresh, a true classic, the best thing by far Mr Cope has ever done) and the first two Flock Of Seagulls albums (if you like synth-rock-pop)... As a Merseysider, I hate to say it, but Manchester had the best new-wave bands ie Magazine, Buzzcocks, Mondays, James, Joy Division (who I was lucky enough to see at Erics in 79).
