L417 contained the remaining two sides of 20th March 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/20_March_1993, completing the show. Unusually sides 1 and 2 followed on from each other so it's been joined ionto one file. L418 to L421 all contained portions of the 4 hour show of 27th March 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/27_March_1993, almost complete though missing the first 16 minutes of the show. (Ken/Roger, maybe you have the missing section in your unshared tapes?). This show features, at last, the Little Richard cover version which John has just found. Side a of L419 contained a section of the Andy Kershaw show of the same date, in my AK Mooo folder. L421 also contained a couple of section of 3rd April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/03_April_1993, followed by a bit of 30th April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/30_April_1993. L422b contained another bit of the 3rd, and now there are only 7 minutes missing from that show. Side a had been recorded previously and was the final bit of 23rd January 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/23_January_1993, completing that show. L423-L426 all featured the Jakki Brambles daytime shows, but these have been shared already in better, stereo sound quality. I might when I'm bored go back through these shows to see if there are any crucial missing links at tape flips, but in the mean time I just moved on to the Derby Box - a bit of 23rd November 1978 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/23_November_1978 from DB040 that Rob forgot to upload plus a couple of Memorex rerips from 19th and 22nd February 1979. PS I also forgot to upload a section of 3rd April from the previous batch, L416, that's now on the Mooo Stuart From so_it_goes_2512@... Mon Jul 4 09:33:41 2016 From: so_it_goes_2512@... Date: 11 Jul 2016 05:46:09 -0700 Subject: Next Lowman batch Message-ID: From L428, L429 and L432a comes a new complete show from 9th April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/09_April_1993. This is the normal Friday night show on the same day of his last stint as Jakki Brambles. It begins at an odd time, 10:50 following a bizarre Man Ezeke / BBC Radiophonic Workshop programme, of which the last 5 minutes were on the start of L428, if anyone is interested. The news sequence has also changed, which also conspires to throw out John's timings. John does advertise a possible debrief of his week as JB but it doesn't really materialise. Features Drop Nineteens and Nelories in session, as well as Peyote's sublime Alcatraz. Funnily enough the Dweemis mixtapes that are appearing on Youtube are from this era too with some of the tracks from this show on Tape 68/69 now identified from this show, as well as a few Mike Best Of tracks. L430 contained the new middle 2 sides of 10th April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/10_April_1993, Steve now using the news as an opportunity to just flip over the tape rather than starting a new tape on side a. Th'Faith Healers and Crane in session. Several references to an exciting first 7 minutes of the show, but tantalisingly this is not available (yet) it might crop up at the end of an Andy Kershaw side one day. The end of L429b and L427b were used to create a section of 24th April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/24_April_1993, that show was already complete. (L427a is dedicated to the Brambles shows, which I will get round to in slower time) L433 contained two consecutive portions of the Andy Kershaw Show of the 3rd April, followed by the missing 7 minutes of the start of 3rd April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/03_April_1993, which is now complete. L434 contained two discontinuous portions of Andy's 17th April show, ending with the first 12 minutes of 17th April 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/17_April_1993, again a show that was already complete from Isector. That leaves L431, which is a Music Of Our Time, not shared, and L432b, which is from 1st May, which I think there is more of in the next batch, so will wait to see what can be joined up before sharing. (AK shows in my usual subfolder of the Mooo) PS one of the tapes I ripped this week was muffled for the first 20 minutes (not fixable by azimuth adjustment) can't remember if it is one of the above or one of the ones not shared yet..... This is also the station where John got hired as their Beatles correspondent and into one of his first radio jobs. So a few years ago I'm digging in an absolute cluttered mess of a used record shop in Dallas. I mean there were shelves of 5000 discarded 45rpm singles all haphazardly stacked and everything was priced on the owners whim so it was quite discouraging BUT there in lots of crap was this Ran-Dells "Martian Hop" 45 Promo. Now it too is pretty common everyday fare except that this copy was from Weird Beard's show on KILF 7-Midnight and it appears had been given to a guy named Randy from Weird Beard. Plus its 1963 so it'd be an exact 45 that was on air when Peel worked at that station. Not worth anything but seriously, how cool is that. For it to survive too with the generic sleeve and Weird Beard's signature. I was incredibly happy and kind of in awe. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks to Brexit the Pound is now so weak that it came in way over that threshold. We may have just squeezed it past if it had come before the Referendum! So we had an extra £24 to pay - which Rocker sorted out from the funds. In his capacity as KLIF's voice of the Beatles, John would be called upon to answer whichever enquiries about the Fab Four the young Dallas audience saw fit to send his way, though there would typically be a record played between question and answer, to give John time to find out the name of Paul's pet marmoset, or how many sugars Ringo's Auntie Beryl took in her coffee." John goes on throughout his life to mention his days in Dallas and Weird Beard quite a bit in various interviews so its just a fun tidbit and something that this US-based Peel fan was rather astounded to find 50 years later in a pile of swap meet records. Thanks to Brexit the Pound is now so weak that it came in way over that threshold. We may have just squeezed it past if it had come before the Referendum! So we had an extra £24 to pay - which Rocker sorted out from the funds. We should have given the true value as "priceless" and let them figure out the VAT on that   On 26 July 2016 at 18:16, Stuart Brooks stuartb@brooks22.plus.com [peel] wrote: Thats good news, I was thinking it had all gone quiet! Last year I began closing up 30 years in Atlanta and moved to New Orleans - which of course has the most music-rich history of any city in the US. Having a grand time; all the effort to get here (and whew it was a damn chore) was worth it. As stated previously, I had UK friends in the 80s and 90s recording and shipping Peel BBC Radio One shows on cassette for me. Meanwhile I was recording his BBC World Service Shows both over the air (SW low-fi) and via a cleaner - but still mono - satellite link. My plan was to log all the dates of the shows I have - and post to this list - before making the big ATL to NOLA move, but life got complicated .... and I moved the all the tapes here in November still un-catalogued. (Somewhere I even have my own recording of the funeral service in Bury St Edmonds. I believe the only Yanks to drop everything and fly over were Jack White, Laura Cantrell and me.) I want to inquire how your digitization of tapes is going. Are you ready for another large batch? Obviously I need to post a logging of all the FM shows I have... so that shows you have already archived are not shipped over. But what I have done this week is separated out all the BBCWS shows I have... it is between 75 and 80, and the parcel weighs 12-13 pounds. All the shows begin with an often-clueless continuity announcer intro-ing the show (the best intro is the BBCWS promising music from "Prince Far The First.") Then comes Grinderswitch and then an ever-changing clever greeting from JP, then basically a 30 minute condensation of the week's 6 hours of domestic shows, sans sessions. He would get maybe 4 letters a month and he'd read those out, sometimes even a letter from me. Then Grinderswitch again as the outro, later changed to any extendable techno track he liked. For a time he was limited to playing UK tracks only, some BBCWS silly rule, then about 1990 that changed. My satellite dish friend probably recorded every show over 10 years, but we only saved the best ones and rolled over the rest, alas. So the surviving shows are good ones. Anyway, shall we extend the Peel Wiki to the World Service shows? Who would like all these cassettes? And do we want to do a little funding-site thing to pay for the overseas shipping? I can contribute but can shoulder all of it. Then I'll move on to logging the (plus or minus) 300 R1 tapes, yes? Hello Martin Wheatley - still around? Hello Phil Edwards and the missus. Hello Ken Garner?  Is David Cavanagh on the list? Love love love the Good Riddance book. If anyone on the list is passing through New Orleans and wants to re-define the term "pub crawl" please please get in touch. I buy the first 4 rounds. I am still doing film video editing.... here is a little taste of my new world. https://vimeo.com/155266481 I urge you to check out our startlingly good R&B/jazz/heritage station here WWOZ-FM. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi all The first 10 of Tom's BBC World Service tapes are now uploaded to Mooo in this folder Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Mooo Folder There are no wiki pages yet for the shows (feel free to create them - I'll concentrate on the ripping and organising) but I've added the details to the master wiki page for the tape box Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Wiki Page So far we have on these first 10 tapes: 05 December 1984 (BBC World Service) Late December 1984 (BBC World Service) 04 January 1985 (BBC World Service) 14 January 1985 (BBC World Service) 08 April 1985 (BBC World Service) 26 August 1985 (BBC World Service) 28 October 1985 (BBC World Service) 03 December 1985 (BBC World Service) 02 January 1986 (BBC World Service) 28 February 1987 (BBC World Service) 23 March 1987 (BBC World Service) 05 November 1987 (BBC World Service) 13 November 1987 (BBC World Service) 26 July 1993 (BBC World Service) 23 February 1993 (BBC World Service) 10 March 1997 (BBC World Service) 17 March 1997 (BBC World Service) The last 4 skip ahead in time because the dates were wrong on the inlays, should be back to 1988/89 with the next batch One curious thing is that on two different shows Peel plays a band and then says they are booked to record a session for the domestic show (Hail and Bette Davis & The Balconettes) but I don't see any evidence of either session in Ken's book. I wonder if bands blowing out sessions was more common than you think?
