I’d be willing to help out with tapes unless Rocker gets in first with some Lowman tapes (no that’s not true, I’d be happy to do the lot!) My deck needs some ripping action or I fear it will seize up. A 3-head deck would be best for the best possible quality extraction from a tape but correct azimuth setting is even more important, a pre-requisite I would say, and a 2 head deck could be found quite cheaply on eBay. I always take the door off a deck to allow adjustment of the azimuth screw during playback until it sounds clearest and most stable. With all that drifting in and out , overspill , flanging and whistling...it really sounded like we were in someones flat back in 1978. It has not concerned me thus far, as I have no Peel tapes worth ripping. I do have some other old tapes which I would like to digitise, though, and to this end I have connected an old cassette deck to my computer - a Pioneer CT-F500. I noted in particular the recommendation to buy a Behringer interface, as I recently bought one. I needed something, as my new Mac has no inbuilt audio input. I use Audacity for recording from various sources, so am hoping that will enable me to carry out any necessary tweaks. Anyway here’s my attempt - here I think the Apollinaires session is from Jensen. The first track is not from the Peel session and the second one, Envy The Love is different to either the Peel session version (which was last broadcast in Sept 82) and the single version. The Ideal Couple and Shape Up tracks are identical to a Youtube share of what purports to be a Jensen session from 15th June 1983. However that might be a repeat broadcast. Either that or the Jensen session is actually a Crowley one. See http://www.thespecials2.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=23604 I can’t ID for certain two of the Black session tracks, and I don’t know for sure if the first one is Black..... His Copeness was on top form in the interview section with Colleen which preceded the playing of JP's copy of Kilimanjaro (although technically it was one of 3 copies he had, which apparently happens a lot in the collection - presumably white label or advance copy then the actual release, and in the case of Kilimanjaro, the reissue that quickly followed the first pressing). It felt a bit odd at that point to just put a record on, but it worked really well and the sound quality, even in that relatively big space was excellent. I closed my eyes the moment Ha Ha I'm Drowning started and I was transported back to my bedroom in 1980... There was a quick chat with Dave (no surname given) from the John Peel Archive before Julian arrived. He mentioned that they were looking for more finance before embarking on the next part of the archiving of the collection. Some numbers were given about the collection; 20,000 vinyl LP's, 50,000 CD's, 50,000 singles and an unknown quantity of 12" singles. As I've said, Copey was an excellent interviewee; funny, self deprecating and just ever so slightly scary. I'm struggling to recall some anecdotes, of which there were many; apparently he's a big reggae fan and when he lived in Tamworth walked to school with a kid who would go on to be the keyboard player with Steel Pulse. He made a big thing of doing the Peel Sessions and of listening to John's programmes in the early seventies. Mark C From stuartb@... Tue Jan 26 00:56:01 2016 From: stuartb@... The line up was great and I remember The Pop Group, the Raincoats, JC-C and  Essential Logic well but I have no memory of Mr Peel as compere. I know that Steve So It Goes has an appearances list so this should be added if it s not there already - at least as an advertised appearance - did anyone else go and can they remember him being there? I don't remember that it was organised by the Morning Star (I remember it as a GLC thing) or seeing any of the Folk/Jazz on offer so don't rely on my memory - but it would be odd if he was and I don't remember as I was a besotted teenager ...
