Date: 04 Dec 2016 12:07:04 -0800 Subject: Lowman Genesis and another great KevH tape Message-ID: We go back in time to the genesis of the Lowman tapes, a trio of shows recorded from the 21st to the 23rd September 1981. These are edited but generally include runs of consecutive tracks with links. A further 18 minutes added to the Derby Box share of the 21st almost completing the show, then an hour and 7 minutes of new show 22nd September, featuring the debut of Altered Images 3rd session, and a couple of tracks from Stimulin’s only session. Then we hit Peak Clare on the 23rd, the day John went to see Gregory’s Girl, and almost an hour of this new show, with 23 Skidoo and Motor Boys Motor in session. Next up a 15 minute section of new show 14th October 1981, including 1 Passage track, but no Method Actor session tracks (though see a bit later….). Then around 49 minutes of 15th October , which when added to the Derby Box share, means only the last minute of the show is now missing. Finally a short snippet from the 30th December 1981 adds a few minutes to the F50 share of that date. Most of these tapes were rather dodgy looking Yakima tapes, the super lightweight rough-ferric oxide look tapes, that you just know are going to shed. And one of them did quite badly and had to be re-ripped after cleaning the deck, and these tapes do sound a bit ropey. After a final cleaning it was on to the next KevH tape just as a reminder how good the medium can sound, with Derby-esque sound. This tape contained sessions from January and February 1982, including the Cure’s 5th session from the 20th January, Altered Images #1 repeat on the 21st, Play Dead’s debut on the 28th, and the Method Actors, as mentioned above, repeat on the 16th February. All of these sessions include Peel’s outros and are all the first shares from these dates. It might well be the best available version of each of these unreleased sessions, the sheer punch of the drums is unmatched by anything that gets broadcast on DAB these days (speaking of which I must listen to the 6music 1989 show while it’s still available). Later in the tape a single Theatre Of Hate session track from 18th February (Kev v. Derby SQ showdown?) then John Cooper Clarke’s session from 15th March, adding an extra track to the Derby Share for the day. The end of the tape contained a brace of Birthday Party tracks recorded from BBC2’s Riverside show. I didn’t include that as it didn’t seem to fit, being of low sound quality and already available on Youtube with video. SL tapes in their usual location and Kev's from the 1982 calendar page. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Apologies for the radio silence on the Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes ripping service. I took a short break due to my summer holiday and then never quite got back on top of life Now that I'm winding down for Xmas, I've got a bit more time on my hands, so hopefully I'll get a fair few more ripped and shared over the next few weeks. This batch covers the tapes TR026 - TR035 As last time - uploaded to Mooo in this folder Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Mooo Folder The master wiki page for the tape box is here Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Wiki Page Nearly all new shares, a couple have been previously shared via the Max-DAT tapes (marked with a *), but the files are no longer on the Mooo so I can't compare the quality One of the tapes in this batch (TR031) had no Peel content despite the promising inlay and TR033 had a duplicate of a show on TR030 in much worse quality, so maybe Tom had an alternate source. A few Multitrack/Top 20 shows in there too, and a couple of Andy Kershaws but I won't share these unless anyone specifically requests them. 1989-10-09 John Peel BBC World Service TR026 1991-08-12 John Peel BBC World Service TR027 1991-08-19 John Peel BBC World Service TR027 1991-05-13 John Peel BBC World Service TR028 1991-05-20 John Peel BBC World Service TR028 1993-06-14 John Peel BBC World Service TR029 1993-08-10 John Peel BBC World Service TR030 1993-06-07 John Peel BBC World Service TR032 1994-03-05 John Peel BBC World Service TR034 1994-09-12 John Peel BBC World Service TR034 1994-10-10 John Peel BBC World Service TR034 And finally a mystery - TR035 contains 3 shows from Oct/Nov/Dec 1994 1994-10-15 John Peel BBC World Service TR035* 1994-11-19 John Peel BBC World Service TR035* 1994-12-19 John Peel BBC World Service TR035 All 3 of these appeared to be already shared via the Max-DAT tapes, and the tracklisting/descriptions match up perfectly for the first two, but the 3rd one seems to be an entirely different show to the one on the wiki labelled 17 December 1994. I thought it may have been mislabelled by Tom, but the news bulletin at the end dates it exactly to 19 December. Even more strange is that John is audibly excited about playing the Fall Christmas Carols session on the World Service the following week - yet the Max-DAT show on the wiki for 24 December 1994 doesn't include any Fall tracks at all. There is a trailer for the John Peel episode (where I assume John gets the same treatment) with a few soundbites, but it hasn't appeared on any of Tom's tapes yet. I can't find any mention of it on the Wiki (although the wiki search is notoriously unreliable) - do we have a copy of it anywhere? From stuartb@... Sun Dec 11 02:53:05 2016 From: stuartb@... Message-ID: Was just checking the available files for the 1982 F50 to see if one of the SL tapes could add anything in terms of quality, only to discover a rare gap in my collection! I know there are a number of shares available, but it's the original "Part 1 to 20" files, for example on the 16th December 1982, the ones listed as John Peel Festive Fifty 1982 Parts 3 & 4. From the page history I can see that no links were ever placed there (Steve SIG I think it was you that started the pages?). Does anyone have a link to the files, or indeed the files themselves? In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Thanks Rob for these shares! The BBCWS MaxDat tape dates were always a bit speculative for the World Service shows as there were usually 8 to a tape, and it's possible that the odd show was missed. The DAT filename wasn't always accurate and this was especially the case with the WS shows. I couldn't find your 19th December show on the Mooo, so don't know if it's one of the other MaxDat shows from December, or one that was missed by Max. Did he definitely say he would be broadcasting the Fall session on the World Service? As far as sound quality goes, MaxDat wins hands down I'm afraid! So there's probably no point in ripping any shows already definitely available from MaxDat, though any show date corrections would be welcome. Stuart From stuartb@... Message-ID: Still trawling my way through the bottom of the big box of SL tapes http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/SL_Tapes_(tapes)#L501-L600.... L579 that I forgot to upload last week, contained 36 minutes of previously shared 8th June 1991. L586 contained a bit of a Peel's Pleasure from 14th August 1982, plus some sections of already shared 18th August 1982, though in much clearer (if low level) sound quality. L588 wasn't shared as the show of 14th October 1982 is already complete in better sound quality. L589 wasn't shared as it was an edited version of 25th December 1985 already available in better quality. Now the new stuff - almost an hour of 11th August 1982 from L591. Again unbroken sections of the show, so even where there there is some overlap with the Karl Tape for that day, this includes the links. 84 minutes of new show 27th October 1982 came from L587, with Amazulu in session and the Passage in concert. L593 was a multi-year affair, the first side bringing 24 minutes of new show 19th October 1981, when Altered Images are in the studio. A snippet of a show from spring 1994 completes side a. On side b was edited highlights of 16th December 1982. I've only shared the last two session tracks as these are an improvement in quality over the full file for that date. I've still to locate the main F50 shares to see if the SL tape can improve on that, but only a bit of the F50 portion of the show is on tape. L590 contained the last 28 minutes of 23rd February 1984, a new section to add to previous shares for that date, then just over an hour of new show 27th February 1984, featuring the debut of Billy Bragg's second session. Finally for now from L592, 90 minutes of mostly new show 17th April 1984, with the debut of Pogue Mahone. Looks like the next tape will require a bit of surgery as the pressure pad and it's mounting appear to be floating freeform inside the shell housing.... Stuart From robfleay@... It's there now I uncovered another anomaly with the MAX-DAT listings this afternoon too, as I was ripping the show from 2 July 1994, which is not the same as the MAX-DAT 2 July show on the wiki. I think those July shows just need shuffling up by a week, as in this one he talks about next week giving his Glastonbury review, whereas the MAX-DAT July 2 page is the show where he does the review. Glastonbury was the last weekend in June, so I think the pre-recorded nature of the WS shows can get confusing. Even tape decks! Can you point me at a show where you noiticed the speed issues? I wasn't aware that was happening, and it could indeed have been the tapes as some of them are in worse condition than others (and a few are low quality promo cassettes that have been taped over). The symptoms with my tape deck are that the transport mechanism is stuck in the up position, and won't reset. When I switch the unit off and on again you can hear it trying to reset with a click, but it fails and then gives up after about 5 clicks. For example at 1:46 14th June 1993 show - the Grinderswitch lead guitar sounds very fluttery. Also the African lead guitar at around 23m in the same tape. There was one where it was more of a slow down plus flutter but can’t find that one yet. Maybe I will get round to finding where the problem started to save you re-ripping all of them! It might still be the tapes, I didn’t hear any flutter in the Derby Box tapes, other than the Memorex ones the sound was ace on these. Maybe it was a sudden onset failure though! Thanks Stuart. 2016 seems to be determined to kill everything good. It was brand new about 10 years ago, so I wasn't expecting this - but then it has seen some action with the Derby Box, 400 Box and now the Tom tapes. I've replaced the belt with a spare I had knocking around that is far too tight, so it works again but it's no good for ripping as the tape speed is wobbling all over the place, but at least that hopefully means the broken belt was the only issue. I was doing some hard drive tidy up whilst ripping these World Service tapes and I came across an old WordPerfect file that I'd made for a compilation tape I'd put together for someone in early 1994 Most of the tracks were from CDs I owned, but there were 3 tracks I'd totally forgotten about and I must have taped of John Peel (as I don't own them). I tracked down the first two and, despite the fact I haven't heard them in well over 20 years they were instantly familiar The two I found were *THE CARNABEATS- I Love You Everyday*, Sandy (Japanese 60's Psych) *OLIVER- Freezing Cold Like An Iceberg* (obscure British Folk-Blues) both excellent - but the third track is eluding me completely. *JAVA CORTE K'THUMBA- Bamba Wai Chaiboi* Searched Google, Peel Wikia and Discogs but can't find anything at all Anyone recognise it? (entirely possible the spelling is wrong but this is what I had in the file) Obviously the tape went off to whoever I made it for and I don't have any audio to ID the track from any more From robfleay@... His voice sounds quite different, in fact I was convinced the tape was running fast, until I compared one of the tracks played to the Spotify version and realised it wasn't! Also on that tape, a couple of tracks from new Peel Show of 8th April (fully wikified thanks to JP3904's heroic efforts at the British Library, and, in combinatoin with L609, half an hour of new show 9th April 1986, including the debut first session track from the Happy Mondays. It looks like anyone could apply and view the archive without showing evidence. What I read about Caversham is that it takes usually 4 weeks and you are given a date to come and view Peel's tracklistings. If that date is not suitable for you, then you have to find another date, whereas in the British Library, once you email the staff that you want to listen to several Peel's shows, then normally in a week, they make it available for you to come and listen it anytime you want when the library is open, rather than giving you a particular date that you have to go if you want to listen to it.
