My usual downmixcloud.com site only creates a small bit of a file. Clipconverter also seems to give up at about 10% then serves up an incomplete file. Using the Google Chrome Inspect command to discover the m4a file URL allows it to be loaded fine in a browser, I then use IE11 as that is set to download rather than play a file. The download begins at full speed then slows to 20kbs which must be what is confusing the converter sites. But it does look like it will complete the download. Hi all The first 10 of Tom's BBC World Service tapes are now uploaded to Mooo in this folder Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Mooo Folder There are no wiki pages yet for the shows (feel free to create them - I'll concentrate on the ripping and organising) but I've added the details to the master wiki page for the tape box Tom Roche BBC World Service Tapes Wiki Page So far we have on these first 10 tapes: 05 December 1984 (BBC World Service) Late December 1984 (BBC World Service) 04 January 1985 (BBC World Service) 14 January 1985 (BBC World Service) 08 April 1985 (BBC World Service) 26 August 1985 (BBC World Service) 28 October 1985 (BBC World Service) 03 December 1985 (BBC World Service) 02 January 1986 (BBC World Service) 28 February 1987 (BBC World Service) 23 March 1987 (BBC World Service) 05 November 1987 (BBC World Service) 13 November 1987 (BBC World Service) 26 July 1993 (BBC World Service) 23 February 1993 (BBC World Service) 10 March 1997 (BBC World Service) 17 March 1997 (BBC World Service) The last 4 skip ahead in time because the dates were wrong on the inlays, should be back to 1988/89 with the next batch One curious thing is that on two different shows Peel plays a band and then says they are booked to record a session for the domestic show (Hail and Bette Davis & The Balconettes) but I don't see any evidence of either session in Ken's book. I wonder if bands blowing out sessions was more common than you think? Well it seems that even though Tom marked the parcel as a gift and gave a nominal value of $50 - the rules are that any non-EU gift parcels are subject to VAT (plus the "handling fee") if they are worth more than £34. Thanks to Brexit the Pound is now so weak that it came in way over that threshold. We may have just squeezed it past if it had come before the Referendum! So we had an extra £24 to pay - which Rocker sorted out from the funds. Last year I began closing up 30 years in Atlanta and moved to New Orleans - which of course has the most music-rich history of any city in the US. Having a grand time; all the effort to get here (and whew it was a damn chore) was worth it. As stated previously, I had UK friends in the 80s and 90s recording and shipping Peel BBC Radio One shows on cassette for me. Meanwhile I was recording his BBC World Service Shows both over the air (SW low-fi) and via a cleaner - but still mono - satellite link. My plan was to log all the dates of the shows I have - and post to this list - before making the big ATL to NOLA move, but life got complicated .... and I moved the all the tapes here in November still un-catalogued. (Somewhere I even have my own recording of the funeral service in Bury St Edmonds. I believe the only Yanks to drop everything and fly over were Jack White, Laura Cantrell and me.) I want to inquire how your digitization of tapes is going. Are you ready for another large batch? Obviously I need to post a logging of all the FM shows I have... so that shows you have already archived are not shipped over. But what I have done this week is separated out all the BBCWS shows I have... it is between 75 and 80, and the parcel weighs 12-13 pounds. All the shows begin with an often-clueless continuity announcer intro-ing the show (the best intro is the BBCWS promising music from "Prince Far The First.") Then comes Grinderswitch and then an ever-changing clever greeting from JP, then basically a 30 minute condensation of the week's 6 hours of domestic shows, sans sessions. He would get maybe 4 letters a month and he'd read those out, sometimes even a letter from me. Then Grinderswitch again as the outro, later changed to any extendable techno track he liked. For a time he was limited to playing UK tracks only, some BBCWS silly rule, then about 1990 that changed. My satellite dish friend probably recorded every show over 10 years, but we only saved the best ones and rolled over the rest, alas. So the surviving shows are good ones. Anyway, shall we extend the Peel Wiki to the World Service shows? Who would like all these cassettes? And do we want to do a little funding-site thing to pay for the overseas shipping? I can contribute but can shoulder all of it. Then I'll move on to logging the (plus or minus) 300 R1 tapes, yes? Hello Martin Wheatley - still around? Hello Phil Edwards and the missus. Hello Ken Garner? Is David Cavanagh on the list? Love love love the Good Riddance book. If anyone on the list is passing through New Orleans and wants to re-define the term "pub crawl" please please get in touch. I buy the first 4 rounds. I am still doing film video editing.... here is a little taste of my new world. https://vimeo.com/155266481 I urge you to check out our startlingly good R&B/jazz/heritage station here WWOZ-FM. L447a featured an Out On Blue Six while on the reverse was a Mixing It. L448a was an early music doc not shared, while L448b started with Andy Kershaw In Cuba. It ended with a section of 22nd May 1993. This was combined with sections from L450, L451 and L452, as well as a previous share I still had the Audacity files for from L369, to form a 2hr 45min file. This completes the SL version of the show, but was already complete when combined with Isectors version. L449 were music docs not shared. L450 also contained two segments of new show 21st May 1993, which were combined with another segment found on L452 to form what is effectively the last half of the show. L451 also contained a side of the Andy Kershaw show of 22nd May 1993. L453 and L454 were dedicated to Peel Show of 28th May 1993, which I combined with recently shared L438 to create the complete SL version of the show, already beaten to the punch again by Isector! L455 and L456a contained sides of 29th May 1993, which I combined with my earlier share from L369 to give a 150 minute file (again that show was already available in full). I could not bring myself to rip L456b which was a Mixing It Special dedicated to a Brass Band. Finally for now - good news, in the L457 box was found - the missing L397 tape! Side a only shared so far, an Andy Kershaw show from 16th January. The bad news is now that L457 is missing..... though I know there are a few boxless tapes in the large box. In summary, the only real new Peel content was from the 21st May. However we're moving into an era where Isector made fewer recordings so the next batch should have some fresh Peel. Enjoy! I haven't listened to all of it, but either the original tape or the transfer were recorded too loudly and it wasn't helped by a low  bit-rate (68 kbps): thus I encoded it at 128 rather than my usual 192. Next batch - the missing L397b contributed a side of 16th January 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/16_January_1993, this bit of show only previously covered by a few individual tracks from mixtapes. L458 contained a fresh 53 minutes of 5th June 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/05_June_1993, I can't remember what was on the rest of the tape, I'll need to double check that when I get back to Ripping central in a few weeks. L459 contained a couple of sides of 12th June 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/12_June_1993, including the missing last 40 minutes so the show is now complete. L460 was dedicated to an Out On Blue Six http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/Stuart/OOBS%20June%201993%20L460.mp3 episode, unfortunately the sound quality is not the best on this one. (You can see why I was asking about non-Peel shows!) L464 at last is back to Peel, with a couple of sides of 18th June 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/18_June_1993, including the missing first 10 minutes and completing the show. L465a is back to Kershaw from the 19th http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/Stuart/Andy%20Kershaw/, then the rest of L465 and L466 was made of the Peek show of 19th June 1993 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/19_June_1993#Tracklisting, already complete. I guess none of us would have ever taped these things in the first place and kept the cassettes if we didn't intend to listen to them more than once! Some of these World Service shows I'm ripping at the moment have great Peel links as he's properly showboating due to the condensed format. Then the World Service continuity announcer at the end gets more withering as the months go by and he's clearly had enough of sitting around waiting for the unlistenable music to stop so he can announce the news.. I have a penchant!   Sent from my Samsung device . 016 20:02 (GMT+00:00) To: peel@...m Subject: Re: [peel] Non-Peel shows on SL Tapes   OK, you asked for it! Next batch - the missing L397b contributed a side of 16th January 1993, this bit of show only previously covered by a few individual tracks from mixtapes. L458 contained a fresh 53 minutes of 5th June 1993, I can't remember what was on the rest of the tape, I'll need to double check that when I get back to Ripping central in a few weeks. L459 contained a couple of sides of 12th June 1993, including the missing last 40 minutes so the show is now complete. L460 was dedicated to an Out On Blue Six episode, unfortunately the sound quality is not the best on th is one. L461 kicked off with an early music doc, not shared, followed by a short section of the summer solstice Out On Blue Six. On side B was a Mixing It. L462a contained another Mixing It, plus an Albanian documentary, not shared. L463 featured yet another Out On Blue Six, followed by another Mixing It, and a section of the Andy Kershaw show of 12th June 1993. (You can see why I was asking about non-Peel sh ows!) L464 at last is back to Peel, with a couple of sides of 18th June 1993, including the missing first 10 minutes and completing the show. L465a is back to Kershaw from the 19th,  then the rest of L465 and L466 was made of the Peek show of 19th June 1993, already complete. L467, a tape of traditional Irish music, was not shared. L468a was a bit of a jump, containing the final part of 10th July 1993, completing the show. We struck gold on side b with the completing part of 16th July 1993. L469a contain ed a side of the AK Show of the 17th July, followed by an already available side of 17th July 1993. L470a contained the last half an hour of 24th July 1993, completing that show, followed by two sections of Out on Blue Six. The last bit of the file has not yet been shared. Finally for now, L471a is a side of the AK Show of 14th August 1993. I notice The Nightingales are playing Luton (near ish to me) in October and was excited by your reviews to go along. The only problems being a domestic prior arrangement on the day and the fact that it would mean going to Luton.
