From stuartb@... Tue Apr 5 16:32:41 2016 From: stuartb@... (stuartb@...) Date: 05 Apr 2016 07:32:41 -0700 Subject: New mixtape from RobF Message-ID: It's been a bit quiet for new shares recently, apart from the Dweemis Youtube series which is now up to Tape 46. Rob recently sent me his collection of Session Mixtapes (along with the rest of the Derby Box), and I've started to digitise and upload these. The first http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/RF_Sessions_1one is from various dates in 1987, and includes sessions from the Capitols, Primitives, 14 Iced Bears and Brilliant Corners. It was recorded on a WH SMITH FE-1 C-60 (!) It sounds like it has been recorded over a Billy Idol album, the snippets of which, needless to say, have been excluded. I think Rob reused the tape again judging by the bit of 20th May at the end of side two, gradually filling each side with sessions from through the year. The tape has had an exciting life, as the leader is missing from the start of the tape, with music starting instantly on play after rewind. Nonetheless I've managed to extract a good sound from it. Where I've been able to deduce dates, and that adds either to availability or quality to existing shares, date pages have also been edited or created. There were a few tapes in the first half of the Derby Box that weren't quite as clear on their first rip (mainly the Memorex ones) so I've earmarked them to have another go at, the first result is from 16th January 1980 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/16_January_1980, the V2 file. I dread to think what other dirty secrets some of these tapes hide! As for reusing tapes, yes I was a poor student. Towards the end of the tapes I had a single C120 that I would record the whole show on and then dub down my favourite sessions and tracks to shorter tapes. Repeated dozens and dozens of times. I did find the C120 recently but it turns out the last show I taped was the Breezeblock with a live Mogwai gig. No Peel at all. I then swapped to minidisc. After he played his latest single and said something like - "That's our new single and you'll be lucky to hear that on the radio as no one would play that nowadays as Terry Wogan is no longer around. The other one who would have played it was John Peel. When no one was taking any notice of Planxty he played our songs and then he asked us in for a session in 1972 and then it all went mad! So three hail marys for John Peel and god bless Terry Wogan." Another credit for the man ... just read the folk page Folk as a result an dthanks to who did that. On Side two the debut of the first session by the Cranes (an extra track for that show) plus Hey Paulette's debut play of their only session, with half an extra track. On RF Sessions 9 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/RF_Sessions_9 (recorded on a TDK D 90) Bob's 3rd session, first play from a new show, then Pale Saints' only session, half of which was recorded from the first play (a few show) and half from the repeat. Side 1 ended with a clear version of the Shamen's 3rd session, and adds to the share for that date. (Actually side 1 ended with the Siddeleys EP recorded from record so not included here). Side 2 starts with Inspiral Carpets #3, from the repeat play (already available) then JMC's 4th from its first play, with an extra track for that show. Three tracks from Cud's 2nd session, probably from the first play as it matches the track order from Ken's book, but can't be sure as there are no outros. The final Cud track is a record, don't know if it is from the Peel show or not, then A Family Cat EP which was definitely a home record so I left that one out. Assault Attack - a classic! Have it on CD now.. The Cud session on Tape 9 was dubbed off a lad I met at Uni who had his own cassette recording of the 1988 session that I missed. That explains why it is out of date order. The last track "Art!" is indeed from the b-side of the Under My Hat EP. At the time I assumed it was part of the session, but Ken's book later put me straight on that. I taped that Siddeleys EP off a different mate. Next up Ride's first session, repeat broadcast on 10th April, already shared complete from the Rich 200, followed by the debut of Cranes' second session from the following night, new content for the 11th. Side 1 ends with a track each from Morrissey and James, the latter sounding like it might be a home recording of a record. On side 2, Barbel's debut session opens proceedings, available complete and with intros, though not as good SQ as mr maudlin's intro-less share of 3 tracks from his C143 Peel Sessions tape. Then the debut play of the only Fieldmice session (from a new show, and stats fans, breaks the longest run of shows without a recording in the 1988-1998 period). Finally the Charlatans in session from an already available show. RF Sessions 12 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/RF_Sessions_12 on a TDK D90 marks a change in style with the Happy Flowers debut (already available from Rich) followed by Teenage Fanclub's debut session (new for that show). Then it's Bridewell Taxis, 3 of their 4 session tracks, from a show where all four tracks are available in higher SQ but there are a few extra peel outros etc. Finally Ride's 2nd session, played in a one-y on 16th December (funnily enough also shared by me) but this has the outro. RF13 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/RF_Sessions_13 (on a TDK D60) includes a short, lo-fi set from Popguns/Pop Guns, compered by a Mark before moving on to Heavenly's first session, from the second play judging by the micro-differences in the intro to Escort Crash. Lush's only session on side 2 is from an unshared show, but whether the debut or repeat play is unknown. The track order is consistent with the first play but not a guarantee. Then the 3rd play of Babes In Toyland's first session. RF14 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/RF_Sessions_14 shoegazetastic, (not that I am dissing, it, I recorded tracks from all of the sessions featured on this tape myself) starts with the repeat of Catherine Wheel's only session (I taped the debut) followed by the repeat of Slowdive's session (I taped that one) then half of Moose's first session (I taped that too) ends side 1. Side 2 begins with the debut play Babes In Toyland's 2nd session, (I taped the repeat) then Bleach (I only taped 1 track) and the rest of Moose from the same July show (only 1 track previously available for that show) One of the tape boxes had an interesting Dymo label on the end of it, know anything about that Rob??? My copy sounds even worse though. It came from Radio 5's Monday night show "The Mix", presented by Mark Thomas. The programme came from Brighton's Zap club, where the Popguns played their set. I must have seen it trailed in the NME that week so tuned in to record it in glorious medium wave.
