This contains some live adverts read out by John! And there may some more Radio London shows on the way. I've started creating date pages for Dirk's BFBS shows and thought it might be a good idea to have calendars specifically for BFBS (and eventually World Service and Radio Eins), a link to this is now available on the 1986 page. Finally, I noticed a slight edit to the Derby Box page, does that mean that the tape player in the Leicester area is being dusted off for some winter ripping, Rob F??? (m.Luetchford) Date: Thu, 19 Nov 2015 09:38:20 +0000 Subject: [peel] Wiki news Message-ID: Good to hear 1967 Radio London. Very interesting to me that he played Bryon Lee and the Dragonaires cover of Hang on Sloopy in 1967 on Radio London. Predates his first claimed playing of his first reggae disc - popatop by Andy capp in 1969. So earliest example of him playing reggae (well sort off as it is before that word was used) and at this time Mr Lee was apt to cover popular songs in a ska style. Pyramid was the label was set up by an Australian called Graeme Goodall who was a partner in Island music with Chris Blackwell. So part of attempt to bring Jamaican music to the World. As in my girl lollipop. And Goodall was later responsible for releasing Dekker's Israelites and earlier had built the first recording studio in Jamaica. So a man to whom we should be thankful ... The Wikipedia page of Hang on sloopy makes no mention of this cover ... think it was the B side of a cover of bond theme goldfinger. Which is equally as uninteresting apart from its place in history for reggae nerds like me. Fortunately i am not a bond nerd or i might start going on about that too ... Ps peel often referred to his friend Keith as a source of reggae imports. I think this may have been possibly Keith Stone of Daddy Kool Records a legendary Soho reggae emporium. Any one else any knowledge of this possibility ! Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone. A few things going on over at the wiki of late:The biggest news is that JohnPeel3904 has been busy wikifying a large cache of World Service shows posted on Youtube by Steve Lai covering late 1999 to the last show in 2004. Indeed from 2001 most of the shows are now available. Next up, a newly available 21 minute portion of John's Radio London show of 30th July 1967, kindly made available by John F. This contains some live adverts read out by John! And there may some more Radio London shows on the way.I've started creating date pages for Dirk's BFBS shows and thought it might be a good idea to have calendars specifically for BFBS (and eventually World Service and Radio Eins), a link to this is now available on the 1986 page. Finally, I noticed a slight edit to the Derby Box page, does that mean that the tape player in the Leicester area is being dusted off for some winter ripping, Rob F???My own player is gathering dust and cobwebs, I've offered my services to the John Peel Tapes Facebook group but no takers yet. I wondered if anyone may be able to help, I am looking for a specific show aired: 9th May 2000 John played one of my tracks on this particular show, which has always been a highlight for me, but unfortunately I didn't find out that it was played/going to be played until long after the show had aired and I have never had the chance to listen to it. I have trawled the internet and have come across many files that mostly seem to stem back to this group, but however have never found this specific show. I would be extremely grateful if you could keep an eye out for a recording of this show, it would be amazing to hear it. Keep up the good work! Thank you From robfleay@... Having constantly listened to everything coming in over the last few years from 1978 to 1982 there hasn't really been the time either. Having listened now they are perhaps even more fascinating than the late 70s shows. Those 1968 Night Ride shows especially are completely out there and groundbreaking. Back then I can't imagine most people paying much interest. The conversations with poets and Incredible String Band recordings mixed with music from Vietnam are an amazing listen really. To think that kind of brave and alternative stuff was just about coming out of the airwaves then when I was eating Fab Ice Lollies and playing with Airfix soldiers is quite something to contemplate. As I was listening to them in the car driving down the M4 yesterday I was trying to put myself back in 1968 and imagining listening as an adult. They would have been a bit of a shock back then... I can imagine a lot of people tuning out... Incredibly brave broadcasting really. I look forward to the rest of 1968 and onwards. I think if anything John Peel and his ethic may have been under estimated either through all the praise since his death. It was not all Teenage Kicks and The Fall. I do fear for the shows from 1984 onwards as they just don't hold as much fascination for me... I'll get to them one dayand I'll be back with some more 1982 / 1983 pause edit stuff myself soon. Cheers all and if you haven't listened to the sixties stuff then do... it hits home even more what a maverick he was. Not without hisfaults of course ( some of his muttering on those 60s shows are a bit daft ) but as far as taking chances in broadcasting goes , he was out on his own. From john.bravin@... The difference being that they have now made it into a commodity for consumers and we have to pay through the nose and therefore it's older people who attend concerts that cost a ridiculous amount of money and are run as businesses. Finding talent through x factor and the like that they use as mass market testing. This stultifies creativity of youth but I think music made by people with passion will always fight back even without Peel to air them as there is a hard-core that look for energy and connection in music.
