The 5th February turned out to be the first 70 and last 25 minutes of the show. This indicates that the hour broadcast on 6music was more heavily edited than thought. Only 12 minutes now missing from the show. The waveform from the captured 6Music shows show how heavily compressed modern broadcasts are, at least on iPlayer. A copy of this comparison is in the Files folder in the group, called Compression.jpg. The 13th February as Rob indicated added the first of the missing Capital Letters tracks. Interestingly following John’s comments on the show of the 5th, negatively comparing the session version of the Ruts track with the record, he does the same at the end of the Capital Letters track. He namechecks Bob Sargeant on each occasion, which must have been annoying for him.... Finally the 3rd show, the 19th Feb, unusually for a Derby Tape, is plagued with dropouts and channel imbalance. Hopefully a 1-off! From: mailto:peel@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, December 22, 2014 3:51 PM To: peel@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [peel] Re: Derby Box begins.. A few more bits from the Derby Box to keep you going until Christmas DB051 and DB052 were both sold on ebay prior to us getting the box - they contained the full Peel Show from 29 Jan 1979 (which we already have in full from the 400 Box) and the first hour or so of the Friday Rock Show from 2 Feb 1979 (which is also shared in full on the FRS Wiki) - so no content from those tapes, and no great loss. DB053 continues with the last 48 minutes of that Friday Rock Show from 2 Feb 1979 - the quality may be better than the version already shared - I've not checked. Mooo The rest of DB053 and DB054 contain 1 hour 35 minutes of the Peel Show from 05 February 1979 - which is a show that was partially rebroadcast last month under the 6Music Remembers umbrella. Featuring an Undertones session - part of this recording was taped over with a section of the following week's FRS. Peel also mentions that he hadn't done the show the previous Thursday (1st Feb) because his house was flooded so Gambo stood in. This isn't noted in Ken's book and that Gambo-sub show isn't present in the Derby Box, or elsewhere on the wiki, Mooo DB054 also has a 23 minute segment from the Peel show on 13 February 1979 which has largely been shared before via the 400 Box but it does fill the gap in that file where the first Capitol Letters session track had been edited out. Mooo The balance of DB054 and DB055 then make up almost the entire FRS from 09 February 1978. Unshared on the FRS wiki it features a Brand X Peel Session from 1976 and a Yardbirds BBC session from 1966 that isn't listed in either of Ken's books (other than it says they did "dozens"). This is the first duff tape I've had from the Derby Box (a Memorex MRX3 90) - starts out muffled, but comes good eventually. The Friday Night Connection had me racking my brains, especially as TV kept saying how obvious it was. When it finally dawned on me I felt pretty stupid! Mooo Hidden away at the end of DB055 is then 7 minutes of the start of Peel's show on 19 February 1979. Some content is already shared via a pause-button edit in the Hinton Box. Protex & Undertones in session. Interesting to hear Peel playing a pre- "Word-Up" Cameo track. Funk in the extreme! Mooo Now I really am going to take the rest of the year off - have a good one everybody. Most of this show is a Genesis gig and has been previously shared in varying quality. This is from DB037 & DB038 Mooo The complete show from 12 January 1979 (previously unshared I believe) from DB041 & DB042 Sessions from The Only Ones and Stretch. To illustrate how similar Peel and FRS were at this time - Tommy Vance even plays a record at the wrong speed! There is one more compilation tape (DB040) to rip, but there are only two shows on that tape (20-11-78 and 26-12-78) so it should be less complicated to work out . This is one of the sessions that convinced me that JP sessions sounded better than records. You could concentrate on any element in the session eg drums guitar bass vocals while the records seemed to mush it all together into a whole. Whether this was due to the simpler production or the cutting out of the chain the whole record pressing and playback business I was never 100% sure about... Next up a complete, previously unshared show from 12th June 1980, with Radio 5 and Au Pairs in session. Another new show, though only 21 minutes of 17th June 1980 were recorded. A lot of us were listening to 19th June 1980. Not only were full tracklistings available from both Tish Briz and John Peel Papers, but just over an hour from the 400 Box was aleready available. The Derby Box upgrades the audio of the first 47 minutes of that. Finally for now, newly shared, the first 47 minutes of 24th June 1980, a week in which John was sick and the show was hosted by Paul Gambaccini. Happy New Year to all! Better think twice Royce said, “The trust people haven't change they mind about renewing?” “They haven't and they won't. Not now.” Without warning the old man slammed his fist upon the table top. “By God! – there was a time when I'd have called the tune, not danced a jig to theirs. Once they were lined up – banks, trust companies, all the rest – trying to lend their money, urging me to take it!” 00.07.36.458.7z http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/l1TDTVg5/file.html http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/l1TDTVg5/file.html 00.07.36.458.7z http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/l1TDTVg5/file.html Zippyshare.com - Free File Hosting View on www38.zippyshare.com http://www38.zippyshare.com/v/l1TDTVg5/file.html Preview by Yahoo From M.Luetchford@... On the subject of the 6Music Live Hour, it's a great resource for grabbing obscure Peel (and non-Peel BBC) sessions as well as the 30 minute edits of the In Concert shows. They do seem to repeat the same sessions a lot (I think they broadcast the same Leopards Peel Session 3 times last year?!) so I emailed Chris Hawkins the presenter with a couple of suggestions and he took the time to reply and say that they would try and dig them out. Bodysnatchers and Flatbackers in session. DB192 features 94 minutes of another new show, 10th September 1980 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/10_September_1980, records only again, including the fabulous Israel (12 Tribe) Stylee from Mikey Dread, which I vaguely remember emanating from my Grundig Satellit at the time. DB193 contained the first 94 minutes of 18th September 1980 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/18_September_1980. Previously only the Martian Dance session was available from Kev. Also with Positive Noise in session. DB194 is another new share, 94 minutes of 22nd September 1980 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/22_September_1980. Beat in session. An amusing tale stemming from John's increasing lack of confidence in his deteriorating body image. DB195 - to my horror the tape leader had become detached from the tape.
