Most decks can't maintain enough tension to keep the tape tight against the head to compensate for a faulty pressure pad unless it is a Nakamichi which actually lifts them out of the way. There might be better tension just at the point you press play as quite often when you put a tape in at first the deck will tighten the tension by rotating the capstan(s), just to reduce the chance of loose tape feeding into the deck. But you will only get the benefit of this extra tension just as you press play. I stopped listening from 8 till 10 and only listened to Peel from about 1986 onwards. But anyway.... not a lot of stock was taken in that slot , probably because it was perceived as playing fairly middle ground new wave releases without many surprises. Not always the case though although none of those presenters struck me as being particularly authentic in their enthusiasm for left field music. I think John Peel bullied Jensen ( in a friendly enough way ) to genuinely see the light but I was never convinced that any of them wouldn't just jump ship and do any slot they were told to do. 8 till 10 was never really an institution... unlike the John Peel Show. Thats probably why nobody has really organised much info about it online. From stuartb@... Sun Dec 13 20:27:25 2015 From: stuartb@... In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <151a09062f5-765c-104db@...> I have a feeling that pubs used to shut at 22:30 on weeknights (possibly depending on local laws?) so if they were gigging outside Sheffield they might well have heard the end of the show on their journey home. I used to record the show every night with a timer switch on a reel-to-reel tape that lasted 64 minutes, so I could leave the pub at chucking out time, and get home to flip the tape before I went to bed. Sadly I then used to copy the tracks I wanted to keep across onto a cassette, carefully editing out Peel's links, so I could re-use the reel tape (was a poor student then) (In many senses). Some autoreverse decks work by shining a light through the tape, so they can flip as soon as the leader tape is reached, whereas others flip when the tape physically stops at the end of the spool - maybe something mechanical needs adjusting or repairing? I’ve named it Late November as it contains two Jensen shows (still to be dated) and ends with bits of the Peel Show of 30th November 1982 (already shared). Interesting little soul interlude on side 1 – the Nite-Liters track is one of these sounds familiar from my 1970s childhood but had never put a name to it. While Jensen is a lot more obedient than Peel in playing the latest singles he does at least seem to be running through the remixes rather than just always the 7” radio friendly version. The Laurel & Hardy unknown turned out to be Girls by Papa Face. It might be two Jensen shows before that, with Apocalypse in session (won’t know for sure unless these are first plays of the sessions and therefore dated in IN Session Tonight). The Apocalypse tracks are from a Crowley session, and one of them, mixed by the Mad Professor, hadn't been released on record, and the band didn't do a BBC session. But what a great find, and the linked Apocalypse website is well worth a look. Back to the matter in hand, and a wiki page is up http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Karls_Tape_January_1983 for the January mixtape. I really had given up on dating these well on into the track listing as inevitably the first two Jensen sessions were repeats and couldn't be dated. But finally the third Jensen show had a debut session, dating the show to 5th January, followed by a Peel session track from the same night. The two earlier dates were the 4th and 3rd, as the December 82 shows are all well documented. So that's the first Peel content to be confidently dated for the first two months of 1983, a desert hitherto! Many thanks again to Karl, and can't wait for the next installment!
