A nod perhaps toward the idea that dominant ideologies control you with language. To have used the term gig of course meant you were fully under the control of white boys with guitars ... and that. Incidentally by 1982 it was hard to go to a gig and see a guitar band as such. In London anyway. White funk was very much on the up and to be seen with 2 guitars base and drums was considered very passe. I guess you can blame the NME for that. The Smiths probably dragged it back again though. But one of the tracks (Is She Weird) features on the Pixies At The BBC CD and backs up the claim that it was recorded on June 11 1990. Albeit listing Miti as the producer and stating a broadcast date of August 20th 1990. http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/20_August_1990 Our wiki page here and Ken's book only mention The Heartthrobs in session. No Pixies Our wiki page on the Pixies does list the session though, but says broadcast date unknown http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Pixies Interestingly the tracklisting for the show on 21st August starts with Is She Weird, but the link is dead so I can't check http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/21_August_1990 Any ideas? (dgmccarthy@...) Date: 12 Apr 2015 23:13:01 -0700 Subject: Mystery Sessions Message-ID: Hi all - it's been some time since I posted - or even visited - the group. Like, four years. Slack. I am now getting back into digitizing my DAT collection. Some may recall I listed my Peel sessions and provided copies to those interested. While possibly the most interesting, that represented less than a quarter of the tapes I made between 1989 and 1993 while working at BBC Radio. Other life matters aside, one reason I came to an impasse was that some tapes were recorded long-play and I no longer had a machine that would replay them. I have now remedied that situation (thank you Ebay) and have a bunch of odd program recordings that I made, possibly as they were being broadcast. There are a couple of Peel shows but the tapes are in other hands right now; I'll report back with the dates when I recover them. The programs comprise a few Radio One and Radio Two shows from late 1992 and I'll post details if there's any interest. The real motivation for writing is to garner assistance (pun intended, if Ken is reading this) in identifying a bunch of Radio One sessions that are not Peel. As with my Peel sessions, I recorded whatever I could as it came to hand; it could have been a complete session that I worked on at Maida Vale, or a track played during a show broadcast. And, unlike Peel, the weekday R1 shows at the time that commissioned sessions (Nicky Campbell, Mark Goodier, etc) used them for a week's worth of broadcasts, i.e. one or maybe two per show. Thus I have a bunch of single tracks as well as complete sessions from a collection of obscure and not-so-obscure artists many of whose details I cannot track down. Any assistance with these would be hugely appreciated. I thought I had notes for all this but, if I did, they have disappeared in the intervening 25 years (they may be on a floppy-disc from an Amstrad PCW, if anyone remembers them!) Although acquired during the 89-93 period, some sessions are quite possibly replays of older material. And, as before, I'm happy to provide files for those who would like them. I should mention that some of the tapes have broken or become corrupt so I can't guarantee that I have full copies of everything. Here are the first three tape listings with any info that I have discovered (thanks Ken Garner's "In Session Tonight'): Note: my use of the tilde '~' is to indicate that it was 'probably' this broadcast The Dark (4 tracks) A Certain Ration (1) identified as 'Backs to the wall' ~Campbell 7/8/89 (Ken Garner) Dennis Greaves and The Truth (3) Summerhill (2) identified as 'Lately' & 'If I knew better' ~Campbell 2/10/89 (KG) Mike Oldfield (1) obviously 'Tubular Bells' with Peel narration. Campbell 11.9.89 (I did note this) Castanarc (4) The Purple Helmets (4) The Grip (4) Lenny Kravitz (4) Brian Kennedy (4) Blue Aeroplanes (1) identified as 'Careful boy' ~Campbell 5/3/90 (KG) Tanita Tikaram (1) identified as 'Thursday's Child' ~Campbell 29/1/90 (KG) Hinterland (4) La Sonora Dinamita (4) first track unmistakably 'La Bamba' ~Kershaw 22/4/90 (KG) The Lightning Seeds (4) Geneva (4) The lyrics suggest these are the songs from the Friday Rock Show 23/3/90 (KG) Kevin Coyne (4) lyrics indicate Kershaw 25/3/90 (KG) Green on Red (4) Identified these from the released CD of BBC Sessions as Richard Skinner 29/11/89 16 Tambourines (1) Seven (4) Jungle Brothers (4) lyrics indicate Kershaw 15/4/90 (KG) Blue Aeroplanes (1) '...and stones' ~Campbell 5/3/90 (KG) Mary Coughlan (1) One More Story (1) The Shamen (2) 'Move any mountain' & 'Human energy' Lies Damned Lies (1) identified as 'Say you won't forget me' The Adventures (1) 'Love's lost town' ~Campbell 19/3/90 Dean Dwyer (4) includes "Cruelty called tonight' Masasu & P.K. Chisala (3) Shawn Colvin (1) Eddie Reader (1) As I write this, I am convinced I have a list somewhere. I have numerous copies of my Peel list but damned if I can find this one. Anyway, thanks in anticipation. More details as they are uncovered and further listings as time permits. Cheers David From robfleay@... Mon Apr 13 09:46:46 2015 From: robfleay@... (RobF) Date: Mon, 13 Apr 2015 08:46:46 +0100 Subject: [peel] Mystery Sessions In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hi David Welcome back - as a recipient of a few of the pristine quality Peel sessions you shared a while back, I'm pleased to see your re-emergence! I'm always interested in this era of sessions, whether Peel or not. I have always worked on the assumption that In Session Tonight is nowhere near complete when it comes to non-Peel sessions, as there were plenty of things I remember taping that never appeared in his book (like you say a lot of Nicky Campbell stuff, which were either live sessions or pre-recorded and inserted into live interviews to make them appear "live". Also I think a lot of the live sessions that appeared on Saturday Live in the mid-80's never made it to Ken's book) That said, I can't help you with any of the items on your list, but hopefully your notes will turn up. Not sure about the program times, though. Peel moved about a bit and was certainly on the weekends at some point. Nicky Campbell was Mon-Thu evenings but I only recall Skinner on the weekends (or filling in) as he had a regular GLR weekday show. I did a few memorable Saturday Sequences with him where we crammed bands into the studio for live sessions. Now I just need to find track names for these odds and sods. Anyone know anything about "The Dark"? There have been a few bands of that name, but none seem to fit the style or period. From dgmccarthy@... Mon Apr 13 13:05:07 2015 From: dgmccarthy@... Currently I'm writing a comprehensive essay on the groups BBC radio appearances and in that capacity I am very interested to learn if anything Bonzo's, Vivian Stanshall / Bonzo Dog Freaks, Neil Innes / The World and / or Roger Spear turns up in your collection. Could you please add me to your list to keep me informed? Many thanks so far! Best regards, Vincent From: "dgmccarthy@... [peel]" To: peel@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, April 13, 2015 8:13 AM Subject: [peel] Mystery Sessions   Hi all - it's been some time since I posted - or even visited - the group. Here are the first three tape listings with any info that I have discovered (thanks Ken Garner's "In Session Tonight'): Note: my use of the tilde '~' is to indicate that it was 'probably' this broadcast The Dark (4 tracks)A Certain Ration (1) identified as 'Backs to the wall' ~Campbell 7/8/89 (Ken Garner)Dennis Greaves and The Truth (3)Summerhill (2) identified as 'Lately' & 'If I knew better'  ~Campbell 2/10/89 (KG)Mike Oldfield (1) obviously 'Tubular Bells' with Peel narration. Richard did work hard! Martin also listed the Purple Helmets as 8/11/89, so I may have picked it up on repeat. The Grip session was one I worked on and it looks like Martyn Parker may have produced and engineered. It appears Martyn may also have worked on the Purple Helmets session with Ted de Bono. My Amstrad print-out is a little erratic so I don't know if I can trust where it lists A Certain Ratio and Dennis Greaves as being broadcast on the same evening. I didn't get an exact date for Summerhill. I still can't find any info on The Dark! From stuartb@... Tue Apr 14 02:46:24 2015 From: stuartb@... (stuartb@...) So the best way of getting hold of these shows is probably to make a request for a specific show. Until such times as there is a known repository of sufficient space to hold all known shows then building up your collection piecemeal by request and by Mooo / Mediafire is the best alternative. Even if it's not listed on the Wiki a show might be on the Mooo if you just go through the folders. I think between us we probably have everything and a few of us probably have just about everything that's been shared. Stuart On 15 April 2015 21:11:47 BST, "battingtosavethematch@... This show had a slight glitch during the Cure track, now fixed. Any other glitches that are noticed, other than at the 47 minute tape flip, let me know and I'll sort out. John Walters is still on duty on the 11th June 1981 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/11_June_1981, and takes the opportunuity to play both Bob Marley & The Wailers sessions, though only 1 track of the second session is on the tape. As the sessions were never commercially released, then there's the chance that these are the best recordings available. Another rare session is the Gene Vincent & Houseshakers session from 1971. DB243 jumps forward to 30th June 1981 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/30_June_1981, with Skodas and Laura Logic in session. DB244 is another jump to 15th July 1981 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/15_July_1981 and we have repeats from Altered Imaged and Boots For Dancing. DB245 contains 21st July 1981 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/21_July_1981, with Mo-Dettes and Angelic Upstarts in session. Some tracks were previously available on one of Karl's Mixtapes.
