They may have disappeared entirely to you but idle curiosity took me to the ever-reliable Wikipedia (ahem)  they are still very active and indeed have  a facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/GruppoSportivoOfficial and seem to have played a gig this month in Holland in the Hague http://www.paard.nl/ - bit of a long walk so just as well you didn't know!

This one willl be fascinating for me - I remember listening to it in the comfort of the parental home, three weeks before moving to a strange new town (Bristol) to be a student - I must have been impressed by the Gruppo Sportivo session because on my first night off the leash I walked two miles across the outskirts of town, map in hand, to see them play at what was then Bristol Polytechnic.

Soon after that, like so many bands, they disappeared entirely, presumably back to Holland, but I still dig out their single 'rock'n'roll' occasionally.

Today's Derby box tape is 90 minutes of the 06 September 1978 show - the third night of Paul Gambaccini standing in for Peel that week.

Sessions from Squeeze and Gruppo Sportivo

1978-09-06 (Paul Gambaccini)

I'm guessing from the slightly smoother playlists that went on this week, these were programmed by PG and not Peel

I wouldn't recommend you all rush to this one, I can only listen to about 5 seconds of Gambo before wanting to stick my head in a bucket of water. Back in 1978 he was particularly smarmy

Apologies to the Gambo fans

It turns out that the original taper erased his first attempts at Tape DB003 and Tape DB009 and dubbed his favourite bits to Tape DB010.

You can see from his original tracklists here

that everything he ticked - was dubbed to DB010 and the rest was sadly erased.

So DB010 is a compilation of sorts, but nonetheless contains

>>Many thanks Rob! Just played 780828 and it's one of the best Peel shows I've ever heard ! The audio quality is amazing, like it's from last week!Magazine were my fave band from 78 to 81. Maybe if I'd have heard the previous rip on headphones I'd have noticed it ; I hate digital artefacts - heard them a lot in the early days of mp3/sharing - like a faint bubbling noise, horrible...
