Also, 09 March 1996 (BFBS) http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/09_March_1996_(BFBS) is complete and contains John's thoughts on Jarvis Cocker's Brits sabotage. (Yes, Stuart, it's coincidence that these are the next two on my list!) Many thanks to Colin and Carsten. Best wishes Steve (TK) From stuartb@... Sat Mar 1 19:19:19 2014 From: stuartb@... (stuartb@...) Date: 01 Mar 2014 10:19:19 -0800 Subject: June and early July 1990 getting sorted out Message-ID: The 19th June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/19_June_1990 show contained two continuous chunks adding up to 53 minutes, which when added to the individual tracks available on my own mixtape from the time add up to around an hour. Featuring half of James' 4th session, and tracks from Sonic Youth's Goo, which seem to get daily plays for the next few weeks. The show of 20th June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/20_June_1990 is virtually complete and has Sink in session. Also dating the Best Of Peel Vol 8 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Best_Of_Peel_Vol_8 has allowed a fuller entry for 26th June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/26_June_1990. This is a composite of Best Of Peel and Happy Flowers: Pixies from Pates Tapes though doesn't seem to have any Happy Flowers. Around 75 minutes of this show available and features My Dad Is Dead in session. BOP 8 also contains 16 minutes of 27th June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/27_June_1990 and concentrates on the Cows session so a page has been added. The 28th June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/28_June_1990 is back to a mixtape created by tape to tape transfer, from R108 and R109. 33 minutes survive and features The Orchids in session. The sound quality suffers at times, clearly the variable record azimuth which I have been compensating for on the first gen tapes, has struck here, with tracks from early on each side of the original tapes sounding very muffled. This nicely demonstrates the much greater impact of accurate azimuth tape playback on the resultant sound quality than whether it is a high bit rate mp3 or flac file. The 2nd July 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/02_July_1990is another mixtape. Just over half the show from R108. Again BOP adds a few tracks to proceedings. The 3rd July 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/03_July_1990 from R077 and R108 is set against the backdrop of the first Italia '90 semi final which goes to penalties. I did previously wonder from the BoP tracks also from this show if it was the 4th July when England were playing, as John wants Nicky Campbell to take over for the last 20 minutes of the show, but there is no specific evidence for this. Certainly reference is made to Maradona a few times earlier in the show, the only other clue is that the ref looks like someone out of MASH. 42 minutes in total, 39 from the Rich tapes in variable quality, and just one session track from Krispy Three. While I was at it I made a page for the snippet of 21st June 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/21_June_1990 which was found on a 1987 show. There are a couple of undated tracks on BoP7 which might also be from this show. Thanks to Rich and Mike From stuartb@... Sun Mar 2 02:28:30 2014 From: stuartb@... I thought I would just run through this and correct the links but as usual the detective in me intervened and I have a few questions about the first show in the list, 11th August 1968 Three versions of the show were listed in the links section of the page, one being the session tracks and intros shared on Hal’s Blog. Another was the fully reconstructed show, File 3, using independently sourced records (this file no longer available anywhere as it was on Kimdotcom’s little site, anyone have it?). Bill’s show, the one whose link I am updating, File 2, appears to be a partial reconstruction, containing mainly the contents of File 1 (session tracks and intros) plus a couple of records. The sound quality appears to be identical to File 1. Is this perhaps a partial or first go at reconstruction, and who did the complete reconstruction, was that you as well Bill? The comments section on the wiki page also refers to a recording of lesser quality but including most of the first half of the show complete but this is not referred to in the links. Does anyone have that file? He was MY producer as well ! Ok, it's a very grand claim to fame I know, but he did at least once produce a student radio show I did at Sub CIty in Glasgow in the 90s. (This was probably around the same time that Sub City won some award and the prize was that the Beeb came to broadcast some shows from their studios - can't recall if Peel was there, but I know that Steve Lamacq was using 'my' desk etc later in the day. All three are excellent presenters, and all three shows are stuffed with delights, but this very Balkanization of musical styles suggested that somehow, the point of what made John Peel's shows different - the idea of there not being any genre-tramlines to keep within - had been badly missed. Next came the big, showy event in honour of a quiet, shy man. The suggestion was that this was to be Radio One's equivalent of the Reith Lectures; a focus for continuing the founding father's work. And in year one, it was a fitting tribute. Last year - year two - it had already shrunk somewhat and had the atmosphere of an anniversary meal for a couple heading for divorce: everything was booked, all the elements for the evening was there, but a sense of going through the motions hung above the night. This year, it's shrunk even further, and been co-opted into the Electric Proms, although you can still submit details of a gig http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/johnpeelday/2007/gigs/submit/ you might want to do, to. And, as part of the 40th Birthday celebrations, Elijah Wood is presenting a programme called Keeping It Peel. This isn't totally inappropriate - Wood had been lined up as a guest host to cover what turned out to be Peel's final holiday - but the attaching of a Hollywood name to the Peel show demonstrates how far from "Keeping It Peel" the network has drifted. Clearly, Colin Murray is seen as being a sort-of the 2007's John Peel. But we know in our hearts that he's just keeping it Campbell." From stuartb@... Sat Mar 22 02:30:02 2014 From: stuartb@... Smarting from failing to land any of those eBay tapes, I did discover some early 1980s mixtapes on Soundcloud and have documented them on the wiki. Soundcloud member Tremble The Dog has a post-punk dominated mixtape documented here http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Tremble_The_Dog. Alien Sex Fiend have a collection of off air recordings of their first two Peel sessions including intros, documented here http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Sex_Fiend_Mixtape. And finally, a new version of the start of 30th May 1984 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/30_May_1984, the night Liverpool won the European Cup in Rome. The twist here, being that while one of the previous recordings began with the preceding Radio 2 football coverage, This begins with the last 27 minutes of the preceding Radio 1 Kid Jensen show in which he describes the latest state of the match and the state of the Peel between every record. The 2nd August 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/02_August_1990 is missing around 17 minutes and features the Inspiral Carpets repeat. Tapes R120-122 contained mostly edited versions of shows from August 1990 which have already been shared in complete form in better sound quality so have not been shared. R123 to R125 contained edited portions of several shows. 5th September 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/05_September_1990 11 minutes only, some of which previously shared on Best Of Peel. 12th September 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/12_September_1990 24 minutes worth, some of which was identified on the Best of Peel series. 24th September 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/24_September_1990 16 minutes, again some on BoP. 6th October 1990 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/06_October_1990 43 minutes, adding to what was available from the 500 Box, and completing the Farm session. R125 also contained a distorted tape to tape edit from Autumn 1989 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Rich_Autumn_1989which . At this point the tapes' contents are starting to diverge from those advertised on the box, with R127 currently being ripped from 1991. Thanks to Rich, and curses to Mike for his seamless tape edits on the Best Of Peel series making it be hard to be sure about dating! From ken_garner@... Thu Mar 27 17:58:58 2014 From: ken_garner@... It's not a continuous 94 minutes, with a significant jump towards the end of side 1, and another one at the tape flip which appears designed to avoid the mystery Vivian Stanshall session already captured by the L tape from the same show. The Shamen's version of Golden Hair was noteworthy http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/17_May_1983not only disabusing me of the notion that it was a Slowdive original, but also for being more 60s sounding than Syd Barrett's version. Sticking with Pates Tapes, JP3904 has completed the tracklisting of 22nd April 1985 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/22_April_1985 which I started a couple of years ago and must have clean forgotten to complete the job. That show does now contain side b which I think it didn't previously. JP3904 has also tracklisted 26th October 1989 http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/26_October_1989 which contained a second repeat of the No Means No session though the first show that it has been available. Expands coverage of this show from 40 minutes from Phil to just a few minutes short of the whole show. Thanks to CP for uploading, and to JP3904 for the tracklists and helping out with a Japanese obscurity I was stuck with.... Stuart From robfleay@... Mon Mar 31 10:13:01 2014 From: robfleay@... Did you download this recently? Stuart   From: Dr Mango Sent: Sunday, March 30, 2014 9:29 PM To: Peel Subject: [peel] 17 October 1992     I've just been listening to the complete show for this date that was knitted together back in 2012 from the various rips. http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/17_October_1992   It's not clear who did the job, but unfortunately the "part b" segment that starts with the Fall and ends with Attwenger is repeated, instead of "part c" (which is missing). After Attwenger swings around for a second time, it jumps to the Mint 400 track. It happens at the 53:15 mark until 1:29:57.   DM From stuartb@... Mon Mar 31 17:10:00 2014 From: stuartb@...
