Hi Rob

Just trying to catch up on the wiki, but have got a bit stuck at 31st October 1978, the bits recorded onto DB030. Although the file begins with Can, the following tracks are not from this show according to the existing tracklisting. I think the ticks didn’t necessarily correspond to the dubbed version of the tape, but that the taper had them somewhere in his collection. I’ll try and work out what’s going on, I think it will be easier to create the tape pages and work from there.

A new batch of Derby Box tapes to start your Christmas countdown..

A complete, previously unshared show from 13 November 1978
Sessions from X Ray Spex and Matumbi
Mooo

The first 1 hour 10 minutes from the previously unshared show on 20 November 1978 and then another 20 minutes or so of edited highlights from the rest of the show. The taper erased the full last section of the show from tape DB033 and dubbed his favourite bits to DB030 (more of that further down*)
Sessions from Swell Maps and XTC.
Mooo

A nearly complete show (1 hr 50), previously unshared from 27 November 1978

Sessions from Lene Lovich and X Ray Spex

The first 1 Hour 20 minutes of 29 November 1978

Wailing Cocks and John Cooper Clarke in session. 55 minutes of the end of this show were shared from the 400 Box, so this completes up the missing first half
Mooo

*DB030 (along with DB020 and DB040 which I hope to pick up this week) is the edited highlights of a number of erased tapes - for which we still have the original handwritten tracklists for posterity. These are all marked on the Derby Box Wiki Page as ERASED - and the tracklisting scans are on Mooo prefixed with ErasedTapennn.jpg

So DB030 contains edited versions of

31 October 1978 19 mins taken from ErasedTape029 (ticked tracks) available on Mooo
07 November 1978 35 mins taken from ErasedTape030 (ticked tracks) available on Mooo
10 November 1978 20 mins taken from ErasedTape030 (ticked tracks) available on Mooo

  And it continues...

Just the intro of the show on 12 October 1978 survives - the majority of the show (Punilux and Dr Feelgood sessions) is available from the 400 Box - but the intro isn't present, so this makes for a nice little find.
  Mooo

Then in direct contrast we have 3 shows in their entirety (give or take the tape flips)

A full, previously unshared show is from 19 October 1978

Sessions from Molesters and Prag Vec
  Mooo

A full show from the following night 20 October 1978

An all-records show with 3 tracks from the new Status Quo album (this makes me chuckle that while he was heralding the arrival of Teenage Kicks, he was also still championing the Quo, who were heading into their decline). 45 minutes of this show have been shared previously from the 400 Box.
  Mooo

And the full show from 23 October 1978

The Buzzcocks and The Fall in session - already available almost in full from the 400 Box, but this version adds the missing 4-5 minutes and is a significant sound upgrade
  Mooo

  And finally for today...

Only the first 24 minutes of the show from 24 October 1978
Yachts in session - previously unshared. A shame there isn't more of this one.

With so many tapes (of such excellent quality) to get through, I'm trying not to lose momentum, but apologies to anyone who is struggling to keep up with me posting them faster than you can listen to them!

    Today we have

The full show from 02 October 1978
Previously unshared. The Mekons in session (and very good they are too)
    Mooo

The full show from 03 October 1978
1 hour was previously available from the 400 Box, but here it's in its entirety and contains the debut Siouxsie album played in full (which Ken's book mentions as happening on 6th October - so the book could be wrong?) and a session from Wire.
    Mooo

The first 47 minutes of the show on 11 October 1978
UK Subs in session. the rest of the show is available from the 400 Box so this makes the full show now available
    Mooo

I might have a breather now, as I'm offline for a couple of days

Thanks as always to Branko for extending the disk space on Mooo once more, so that we can share these amazing Derby Box recordings. There may well be an avalanche now that Stuart has made a start on his batch too..

      Today from me we have:

      1 hour and 35 minutes of 18 September 1978
A previously unshared show with sessions from Doctor Feelgood and Stiff Little Fingers
      Mooo

1 hours and 45 minutes of the 25 September 1978
Already partially available from the 400 Box - this is the show where he plays Teenage Kicks twice, but the taper didn't like it and so taped over that segment?! The show then carries on to the end.(NB the missing section is luckily in the 400 Box version for posterity)
Sessions from Motorhead and The Skids
      Mooo

Then we have a 15 minute selection of some tracks from 20 September 1978
This is what he taped over the Teenage Kicks section with - he compiled his favourite tracks from this show - and then erased the rest of that tape Original tracklisting was here (it also included the end of the 18 Sept 78 show). Some of his other favourite tracks from this show are compiled on Tape020 when I get there. Sessions from Prag Vec and Whitecats. It's a previously unshared show, so a shame that it was edited down like this.
      Mooo

1 hour and 12 minutes of another unshared show from 28 September 1978
Sessions from Solid Senders (featuring Wilko Johnson) and Viv Stanshall - although Viv's Rawlinson End piece must have been towards the end of the show, therefore is missing from this tape.
      Mooo

I've also managed to date the previously undated two tracks from DB010. These were also compiled from a tape which he then erased (thankfully it looks like he stopped doing this by about Tape040). They are from
      13 September 1978
Sessions from Hot Water and Roy Harper. Original tracklisting was here and again, some more tracks from this show are compiled on Tape020 when I get there.

Today's instalment of the Derby Box is as follows:

The last of the Gambaccini Stand-In tapes. This is 45 minutes from the start of the show on 07-September-1978
This was marked as Friday Rock Show on the original taper's spreadsheet - most likely based on the classic-rock tinged playlist. Repeated sessions from Graham Parker and Ian Dury. Previously unshared.
        Mooo

The first 45 minutes of Peel on 11 September 1978
Sessions from Racing Cars and The Adverts. The next 45 minutes of the show are on tape DB013 which is one that the original taper sold on ebay (on account of DB013 having the first play of Teenage Kicks on Side B - 12th Sept). Hopefully the list member who bought this tape will share it soon! None of this show has been shared before
        Mooo

        95 minutes (a long C90!) of 14 September 1978
Only one session - from Radio Stars, a notable show for the second play of Teenage Kicks. Peel recounts being called by one of the band to say thanks for the initial play, and goes on to add that he has already heard of record company interest for them. "A really excellent record it is too"
20 minutes of this show were previously shared from the 400 Box (but didn't include the Undertones section)

This one willl be fascinating for me - I remember listening to it in the comfort of the parental home, three weeks before moving to a strange new town (Bristol) to be a student - I must have been impressed by the Gruppo Sportivo session because on my first night off the leash I walked two miles across the outskirts of town, map in hand, to see them play at what was then Bristol Polytechnic.

Soon after that, like so many bands, they disappeared entirely, presumably back to Holland, but I still dig out their single 'rock'n'roll' occasionally.

Today's Derby box tape is 90 minutes of the 06 September 1978 show - the third night of Paul Gambaccini standing in for Peel that week.

Sessions from Squeeze and Gruppo Sportivo

          1978-09-06 (Paul Gambaccini)

I'm guessing from the slightly smoother playlists that went on this week, these were programmed by PG and not Peel

I wouldn't recommend you all rush to this one, I can only listen to about 5 seconds of Gambo before wanting to stick my head in a bucket of water. Back in 1978 he was particularly smarmy

          Apologies to the Gambo fans

I'm glad that the Derby Box is generating so many positive comments, it's been a joy to rip so far (and many many thanks to Steve for keeping on top the wiki!) but today's tape confused me completely for a moment

It turns out that the original taper erased his first attempts at Tape DB003 and Tape DB009 and dubbed his favourite bits to Tape DB010.

You can see from his original tracklists here
            http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/RobF/Derby%20Box%20Tracklistings/ErasedTape003.jpg
            http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/RobF/Derby%20Box%20Tracklistings/ErasedTape009.jpg

that everything he ticked - was dubbed to DB010 and the rest was sadly erased.

So DB010 is a compilation of sorts, but nonetheless contains

3 tracks from the end of 18 August 1978 which slightly extends the version of the show shared last week from DB002

Blast Furnace and Hits (AKA Snivelling Shits) in session

            Mooo

Just over an hour of 30 August 1978 of which 40 minutes was previously avaible in lower quality on the 400 Box

Pirates and Punishment Of Luxury in session
            Mooo

A couple of tracks that must have been dubbed from elsewhere (not clear where at this point) and it's impos sible to date them from the brief snippets of talking but I assume from 1978
            1978-XX-XX/

And then some none-Peel content - a few songs from Rock On 19th Aug 1978 (I couldn't identify the presenter but Steve tells me it's Stuart Grundy) - includes an interview with City Boy
            Rock On

Maybe if I'd have heard the previous rip on headphones I'd have noticed it ; I hate digital artefacts - heard them a lot in the early days of mp3/sharing - like a faint bubbling noise, horrible...
