Has the new interface just been released, or perhaps it’s the default and I have forgotten how to switch back to classic view? Only tried the default IE8 on this new Windows 7 install, maybe it will work with more up to date browsers. (Dr Mango) Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2013 21:01:19 +0100 (BST) Subject: SL Tapes (work in progress) Message-ID: <1378065679.74804.YahooMailNeo@...> Over the last couple of months I've been quietly uploading the fruits of my latest batch of SL tapes to the mooo server. Here's a list of the ones completed so far. I've got all the tapes in the batch ripped so it's just been a case of finding the time to go back and master them before uploading the mp3 version. Now that the distraction of the Ashes is over this process should speed up. As is customary, I started with the tapes that offered something new. But I'll list them in tape order: L198 - 23 February 1992. One section of this show from side B of the tape. Previously unshared, this starts with the second track in the show. L199 - This contained two sections of 15 February 1992 on sides A and B. Side A began with the start of the show (previously shared) while side B starts at about 00:20 and stops with the 1 am news. A couple of minutes at the start of the show was brand new but the rest has been previously released. L200 - 20 March 1992. Two sections of this show on this tape. Side A starts about 20 minutes in, curiously at the same stage as the previously released file despite them being from different sources. Side B is 45 minutes of all new material and straddles the 1 am news. L201 - 17 April 1992. Two sides of tape from the same show. Side A is from the first hour and side B takes you to the end of the show. The whole show has been available in full for some time. L204 & L212 - 2 May 1992. The first 75 minutes of the show (30 and 46 minutes respectively) from sides B of both tapes. This is a brand new segment and completes the show from the SL source. L205 - Side B has the first 30 minutes of 25 January 1992 and is brand new. Prior to the above, there's 9 minutes of new material from close to the end of 15 December 1991, also new. There's a couple of unidentified tracks in this show for any sonic detectives. On the other side of L205 there's the last 33 minutes of 21 December 1991. This has been previously shared, which is just as well because the quality of the recording is a bit ropey. L210 - 27 March 1992. Two segments of this show. Side A comes somewhere between 11:30 and 1 am. Side B takes you to the end of the show. Both sides brand new. L215 - 24 October 1992. Two sections from this show on this tape. Both sections were previously shared in part: Side A adds an extra 15 minutes of material while side B gives 7 minutes of new stuff. This is the 4 hour show from when the clocks changed and has recently been compiled into one file. Not forgetting of course that L197 snapped on me but was fixed and ripped by Stuart. All files can be found here: http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/dr_mango/SL_Tapes/ That's all for now. I'll have another big file ready for download later and it's something to look forward to. Tapes L207 and L208 delivered the bulk of the show to go with the final 15 minutes of the programme that I'd previously ripped and uploaded from L252. Nothing of this show had previously been released, so it's great to have it all. Sessions from Action Swingers and Loudspeaker. There is a feedback page here: http://yahoo.uservoice.com/forums/209451-us-groups/suggestions/4276993-return-groups-format-to-prior-format-that-works- where votes can be cast for or against & comments made about the new format. L354 contains sections from the middle and end of the show. 06 February 1993 (Meat Beat Manifesto, Therapy?). The very start of the show, preceded by Andy Kershaw (Oliver Mtukudzi - link here). These are from L349, to complement Lord Turnip's L367. 20 February 1993 (Even As We Speak, Ukrainians). L358 fills in parts near the beginning and in the middle. 27 February 1993 (FSK, Superchunk). Lord Turnip processed one tape of this show, now here's some more filling in the very start and some of the one-third mark, plus the end of Kershaw from that date (Hadji Mike, Simbe Wanyika - link here) 05 March 1993 (Pulp, Polvo). Unbelievably, we still don't have a complete version of this show, but it can't be far away. In toto, we have one file from Isector, another from L326, and now four new ones from L359/L360. 24 April 1993 (Bailterspace, Nectarine No.9). L353 has a short section from the beginning of a prog that has already been shared in full. The remainder of the tape, however, is from Kershaw's first show after his return from Malawi (Dennis Bovell, Fumbi Jazz Band) so is well worth the effort (links here). 30 April 1993 (Bikini Kill, Ivor Cutler). Only a short section on L354 from the one-third mark. OK, enjoy (as I will the next 4 weeks with a block of concrete attached to my leg). Steve (TK) From peter.tron@... Sent: Tuesday, September 10, 2013 12:48 PM To: peel@yahoogroups.com Subject: [peel] Four-piece splicing kit (9,3,9,3,9,8,9,4) Hi guys Congratulations to Lorcan for getting the last clue, Antidote. Here's another batch of stuff nearly all from the SL Tapes. 12 March 1993 (PJ Harvey, Oil Seed Rape). From L357: already shared in full. 14 August 1993 (Loudon Wainwright III, Mercury Rev): Completely new to the catalogue, including the entire Loudon session (L363). 09 October 1993 (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Dr. Phibes & The House Of Wax Equations). From L365, a couple of new tracks followed by previously shared material, and preceded by AK's show from the same date (Culture, John B. Spencer). I was under the impression all the SL Tapes were mono only, but this is entirely in sparkling stereo! What a treat!! 26 October 2004: Mark taped this himself, aptly calling it Night Of Sorrow, the night following John's death, and though it's the type of thing JP would have detested (and Mark was too upset to record it all), it's still a valuable historical document, and to the best of my knowledge has never been shared before. The rest of the tribute shows that week are on Life Has Surface Noise, and I'll get around to track listing them when I can. Finally, L364 contained two complete Mixing It shows from December 1992 and January 1993. I think I dated the first correctly, but if anyone can help more precisely date the second, I'd be grateful. That's all for now: take care. Steve (TK) From peter.tron@... Wed Sep 11 03:56:24 2013 From: peter.tron@... I just listened to more of the lyrics, became convinced they were a session band, and checked Ken’s book for track titles. It wasn’t the most obvious of the lyrics that ended up being the track titles. It’s been verified as one of the tracks cropped up on a repeat for which much more of the show was available. The first two are pigbag/float up cp/y record like. The first is an instrumental on side a and you would have to be a big fan of band to recognise it. On Side B first track is the second sounds like Float Up Cp to me -as I think the vocalist sounds a bit like rip rig and panic era neneh cherry but someone else has edited it in disagreement so I'm not so certain now... The second two sound like they are the same band and maybe a session - Karl's tapes usually only lists the band the first time if it is a session but in this case I can't hear another band that sounds remotely like them earlier in the tape. Oh well back to email, and who knows what I’ll be, mantoid, Stuart, an abridged version of my email, it varies all the time!   I just listened to more of the lyrics, became convinced they were a session band, and checked Ken’s book for track titles. It wasn’t the most obvious of the lyrics that ended up being the track titles.   It’s been verified as one of the tracks cropped up on a repeat for which much more of the show was available.   Now, to the August 1983 Karl Tape, though most of the unidentifieds there I think are not from the Peel show.   Stuart     From: MARK LUETCHFORD Sent: Saturday, September 14, 2013 8:27 PM To: peel@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [peel] RE: Help needed from early 80s peel listeners     well done mate - how did you do that? presume its this lot: http://www.discogs.com/Offspring-Nota-Sad-Song/release/3286978 although to be frank I am only vaguely familiar with the more  famous ones - these sound a lot better - do we know any more about them?   ________________________________ From: "stuartb@..." I have tried over the years to give more back to the group than I've taken and I'm sure some of you have been members for long enough to have these somewhere, so please, if you have them, I and I'm sure many others would be grateful if you made them available again. The quality is a bit muffled, but the entire show has been previously shared in better quality anyway. 1 May 1992 L206b gave up 45 minutes of the show ending with the 1 am news. L204a contained the final two tracks of the programme. Again, the complete show has previously been released. 18 April 1992 L206a contained 37 minutes of show, starting around 00:30. Previously shared. 10 April 1992 This show has previously been shared in full in better quality, but the complete show has now emerged from the SL tapes. Tapes L209 and L211 from my batch made up the bulk of it, with the final 7 minutes of the show having been earlier unearthed and shared by Stuart from L264. 12 January 1992 And finally, something nice to sign off with: the complete show from 12 January 1992. Previously undocumented at all until the SL tapes came along, the start of the show was previously uploaded by Mark L and then two further segments (from the middle and the very end) came to light from my own rip of L084. The remaining 107 minutes of the show come from tapes L213 and L214 so now it's complete. The sound quality on the latter tapes was a bit more muffled that I'm used to with this source: makes me wonder if the taper used a different deck on this occasion. Curiously, the file is 2 hours 59 mins in length, despite the 11:30 news being edited out. It makes me wonder if perhaps one or two of the tapes were running slightly slower on my deck. Anyway, sounds decent enough. All downloads are here: http://mooo.peelwiki.com/dl/dr_mango/SL_Tapes/ All that remains from the batch are 5 sides of assorted Andy Kershaw which I'll document on my own personal webspace here: http://drmango.net/kershaw.htm Dr Mango From br@... Mike ("Robbo") was a really lovely, ever cheerful bloke who engineered countless Peel and Kershaw sessions at Maida Vale studios. He was also responsible for the sound (live or recorded) at hundreds of concerts broadcast by BBC radio. Ever humble, Mike would never boast that much of the technical expertise necessary to link up the whole world for Live Aid was his. In Room 318, he was known to Walters as Bag O' Shite Robinson. This nickname arose from routine exchanges on the phone between Walters and Mike following the recording of a Peel session... Walters: "How was that band of Peel's in the studio yesterday?"
