Mark,
Well I enjoyed the story! And I'm appropriately jealous: for seeing The Smiths at all and particularly when they were on fire ...
I probably would've accidentally missed the opportunity; once rejected the Sex Pistols at Lanchester Poly since I leaned out of my room window at the Hall Of Residence opposite Coventry Cathedral and saw their roadie looking too punk and carrying speakers that were smaller than those in my room. And a couple of years later couldn't be bothered with the Stones [Start Me Up era] with ZZ Top and assorted animals and the Fab Thunderbirds at the Cotton Bowl, Dallas as it wasn't punk enough. Right place, wrong speed in each case.

>Been lurking on the Peel group recently as JP was such a big influence. I'm a big Smiths/Morrissey 'fan', although old enough to be slightly embarassed by the term ... I remember taping the first Smiths sessions and hearing JP say "You might as well start liking them now and then when they're famous you can turn to friends and say 'yea well I've always been into the Smiths" or similar. I was stunned to be 'there' at the birth and forever regretted not seeing them live [work/life got in the way]. Listened to some of my old cassettes a while ago and they've sadly deteriorated, so thanks to all for rescuing the past by posting recordings.
